Ye I dont think ill take the fav at short odds to find out at four in the morn that he does not fancy the trip. I have backed Maluckyday at 12s seems a reasonably solid each way, would like to have supported Profound Beauty but she is drawn in the carpark and prob wont get the ideal ground.

Furthur has to go a bit further than in the the St Leger last time but he was staying on and soft ground wont bother him. 1941 last 3yo winner, time we had another one.

barstool, wouldn't let the age put you off. Rekindling and Cross Counter both European 3 year olds when winning just show up as 4yos in Oz, the same as Further. Out of Waldgeist so might even improve for the soft ground they have too. I'm on, good luck

A person has has a $500,000 punt on Al Riffa…..imagine the feeling if it’s hard ridden 2 out…..

Easy money eh…..hard earned ?

might excite morons like the racing blogger, but if the bloke having 500 grand on is a billionaire its equivalent of me having 50p on,and doesn't alter the horses chances one way or another

Apparently the bet was placed by a bookmaker to which Frankie Dettori is an ambassador and which also is refused a license to operate in Australia. The bookie who accepted the bet has already said he'll be laying some of it off with Ladbrokes

I've had a rare bet on the race. Al Riffa looks a class above this field although I accept it won't be easy with his huge weight. He handles soft going and he's looked very strong at the finish in his last 2 races over the1m6f trip so I can't see the longer trip being an issue. I'll take soft ground loving Valiant King to chase him home/saver bet now that his connections have him back on track.

hard to type in these fookin straightjackets and the noise from the other patients is distracting, the Melbourne cup and I have backed absurde 5th last year after being given plenty to day and not having the clearest passage musta been 20 lengths back before the home turn but ran on well to finish 5th not btn too far hopefully will be ridden claser to the pace this time and an ebor winner like his stablemate ethical diamond who won a breeders cup on Saturday at del mar . around 20ish on here  now hopefully will be bigger nearer race time  will do for me .
selection absurde  20 ish win and 5 places on here .good luck opinions encouraged.

24 runners and half the field can be ruled out (trip, going & ability) So 6/1 in a 12 runner race looks a bit more appealing. You have to balance the competitive nature of such a race with reward of the potential payout if getting it right.

only 2 in 3 figures so 12 lays will add up nicely.

this will be absurdes 3rd try at the melbourne cup it gives me hope that willie   thinks the horse has it in him to go close or why bother persisting !

had a shortlist of 4 since the caulfield cup, first 2 easy to obvious, 3rd is an outsider & needs luck as draw isn't helping, last is a bit of a hunch that gai might be going close

the four are valiant king, river of stars, royals supremacy, vauban & better ground i would have chucked in buckeroo but i think the ground might just stop him (good horse)

i will go valiant king and royal supremacy just for when i watch it back at 10am

Ante Post: Al Riffa who reminds me alot of Pretectionist going into this and Nocturne 16s ew (beautiful run in the Caulfield Cup and wet track extra distance all positives)

Added Absurde, Vaubaun and Furthur after the draw at 26 30 and 30s respectively. Some nice each way terms and value too

Completely agree with your post Foyles regarding Absurde, lovely ew play at 26s

Someone bet half-a-million AUSD at 7/1 Al Riffa.

Good business imo: could be a Kerry Packer style big gambler or could be used to accommodate a host of layers on here.

The way Segal framed it, could be one of the year's best bets.

Has to be a trade

If you a trying to win a chunk this is not the race to do it, unless the geezer is a multi and just wants a bit of the fun

Who do we think will benefit from the rain?

Have the Italians ever won this event?
Presage Nocturne has only been unplaced once on the soft or very soft from 11 tries, 8.8 and 4 places
W P M the magician? Absurde, didnt get a clear run in the Caulfied Cup and is 5lb better off for being beaten less than 4 lengths over an inadequate distance, best flat from has been on good but has won over the sticks on heavy, 18.5 and the same 4 places.

Good luck chaps.

have dropped the 5  places bet on absurde, adding goodytwoshoes at 40s plus on here 2nd string by the betting  but good dual purpose horse who looks to be getting better and a lowish  weight and trip no problem. also further could also improve stepping up to 2m lightly raced 3yo around 33s plus win bets all 3 ,yes I know it dilutes it a bit but its a 24 runner handicap and I like to give myself a chance .good luck.

River of Stars 14/1 EW appeals. Low weight, soft ground and a good 2nd in the Caulfield Cup last time.

Meydaan 34s win 3.0 top 10 looks good value too
