He was a well known/successful NH trainer with stables in Towton near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire. He had a daughter Sally who took over, and then a guy *** Camacho (cannot remember his first name) who may on may not be related to Julie Camacho.
Where the stables were is now housing
Towton was the scene of a famous battle in 1461 in the War of the Roses, won by the Yorkists obviously, where tens of thousands were killed.
It is possible to walk round the battlefield if you are so inclined (free to do so).

To go back to Charlie Hall,the big ( mainly flat ) trainer in the north along with Bill Elsey in the 60s was SAM Hall. I can't find a Charlie Hall in HiT for either 66 or 69,which are the earliest I still have.
I have an inkling he MIGHT have been Sam's dad but if so he was before my time.

Charlie was Sams older brother ,there was another brother Tom who also trained but i dont recall anything about him other than he was the father of Sally. Sams daughter who also trained was Kate Walton

Btw Maurice Camacho was Charlies son in law.

May be wrong here but were his runners on the cards not trained by W Hall Tadcaster.

well remembered Tommy just looked up Doornocker Charlies most famous horse.Was down as trained by W.Hall when winning the Champion Hurdle

Daughter Sally took on the yard for a while I remember. Memories of the northern trainers of the past such as Neville Crump, Gordon Richards, W A Stephenson, Dickinsons, Jimmy Fitzgerald, Steve Norton and of course the Easterbys who are still active.

Shalimah-Doorknocker was way before my time but I remember the name. I had a small interest in a horse a couple of years ago trained by Julie and I'm sure her father Maurice was still very much involved in the stable.
Sageform-Yes we look back on great Northern trainers of the past.One you missed out was Tommy Robson a favourite of mine who could get one ready, (usually a cast off like Magic Court Champion Hurdle).

Tommy,my Grandfather had horses with Tommy Robson,I was very young but I remember there being great excitement in the family when Magic Court won as my Dad had backed him, Tommy was a vet too.

Ribero1- Thanks for that. I had forgotten Tommy was a vet. Magic Court also won the two and a half mile flat race at Lanark (LG Brown) at around 100/8. I recall MC was previously trained by Noel Murless. Did Tommy train at Penrith?

Yes sure you're right,when Tommy retired My Grandad went to Jimmy Fitzgerald who rode for Tommy,not sure whether he took over the yard in Penrith but obviously ended up in Malton,re Magic Court I had it in my head he won the Cesarewitch but having googled he didn't but maybe was 2nd to Grey of Falloden in 1964?

Charlie was originally from Boston Spa, but his early days as a painter and decorator came to a shorte end, and he moved to Wetherby shortly afterwards with his lover. Hence, the Charlie Hall Memorial Chase. Charlie and his lover, Hall.

Doorknocker was an 8yo novice when he won the Champion Hurdle, having missed 2 years through injury. He was trained by Paddy Sleator until 3 months before the Champion Hurdle, winning at Haydock in his name in the December before his Cheltenham win. He then appeared under Charlie Hall's name in January. Given Sleator's subsequent link up with Arthur Thomas, perhaps it's open to question as to who actually trained Doorknocker for the Champion Hurdle. He remained in the same ownership, that of Mr C Nicholson, for whom Sleator purchased the horse as a yearling.

Jack Berry went to work for Charlie Hall in 1950  as a thirteen year old and served his apprenticeship with him before he was called up for National Service- Maurice Camacho if  remember rightly was Charlie Halls adopted son. In the 1950s and 1960s Charlie Halls main owner was Clifford Nicholson he was a leading Steward at most of the Northern tracks I remember some of his  very good horses and his grey and red colours and Paddy Farrell riding them.

Clear Cut not been mentioned yet,was an absolute star at his local course Wetherby in the 70's,a bold front running jumper who had his day in the sun when winning the Mackeson at Cheltenham although by then the licence had transferred to Camacho.

I presume this will have been linked in the forum before, but it's a good watch if you haven't; set in 1968, in Middleham, interviews with both Sam and Sally.

Ribero1. Was going to mention Clear Cut but wasn't sure as I seemed to thnk it was a mare.I will most likely be getting mixed up with another mare at that time. Good memories all the same.

Indeed Tommy,I was cheating a bit as was talking to the Owner of Clear Cut daughter on Friday and it reminded me of him.
