Seem to remember it was at Chepstow and that all the other jockeys were suffering from rigormortis.

Wasn't it some sort of pro/am flat race?

Given much the same "after you sir!" as Scu's last ride at Ascot.

Wasn't Carl a good friend of Declan?

I know he had strong connections in the west country. Sure a certain long time telephone tipster had a payday that day.

I was there that day - never seen so many strangled horses in all my life.
Report erhaab1965 September 6, 2010 12:33 PM BST
i remember this ,D Murphy was backed the week before.
What a con job.it was handed to him on a plate cos it was his comeback from serious injury.
Report The Sawyer September 6, 2010 12:36 PM BST
That's right Erhaab. There was supposed to be a draw for the jockey's mounts in this race but Murphy had already been to the yard to school Jibreen.

Why was Jibereen backed the week before , before any draw was made.

Why did D Murphy ride out the horse previously when oficially no one knew who was riding what ?
Report wicked37 September 8, 2010 7:41 PM BST
there was no betting before u muppets no betfair unless the milkman was a paki bowler !!!!
Report erhaab1965 September 8, 2010 7:49 PM BST
I distinctly recall reading in the racing post the horse was bet on a week before.Shame the racing post archives don't go that far back.

It stuck in my mind because they fixed it so D Murphy would have a fairytale winner after near death.

Report erhaab1965 September 8, 2010 8:02 PM BST
I'm sure somebody somewhere can confirm that it was reported in the racing post that a rails bookmaker had taken a hugh bet a week before.

I'm not saying there was antepost betting available on the class g race for jumps vs flat jockies with Ladbrokes or Hills , but i recall one rails bookmaker saying he took a bet the week before.
Report erhaab1965 September 8, 2010 8:06 PM BST
Why would i make that up , my only grievance is that he didn't win the '94 Gold Cup on Bradbury Star.
Report wizardofoz September 8, 2010 8:45 PM BST
Erhaab, this race was partially responsible for Stephen Little effectively giving the game up.
Report erhaab1965 September 8, 2010 9:06 PM BST
thanks for confirmation.

Out of interest why did you start this thread?

I recently was talking about this to some racing ebnthusiasts but couldn't recall the name too.
Report wizardofoz September 8, 2010 9:08 PM BST
Because someone else had started some "notorious races of the past" threads.
Report wizardofoz September 8, 2010 9:09 PM BST
I could recall the name and all the sordid details btw!

I remember the horse that caused his injury. ARCOT. A racehorse owner i knew had a tip the first time it ran in bumper, hosed up at 14s.Next run was at our local track. Bookies were offering5/2-3. Seemed like everyone was on. Scooted up again. Trouble was it couldnt jump. I think Murphy was thrown on its first run over jumps and again at haydock?
