Pat ‘Shorty’ Leech started his racing career at the age of 12yrs, joining Noel Meade as an apprentice. He became a professional National Hunt jockey at an early age and was lucky enough to finish second to the great Frank Berry (10 times Irish NH champion jockey) in the jockeys championship in 1983, whilst still an apprentice.
He was retained by Noel Meade from 1983 to 1997 and won over 20 flat races and 130 jump races.
Pat’s career highlights include riding a double at Ascot, being associated with the good horse, Ballincurra Lad, winning the Irish Independent Sportstar of the Year and being a three times member of the Irish Jockey’s team.
Since retiring from race riding, Pat has worked for several of the top trainers continuing to bring-on youngsters into full training or as a work rider. He has gained valuable experience in the UK, Ireland and the USA.
Before taking out his training licence he continued as a work rider, whilst also breaking and bringing on young horses ready to go into full training
At the age of 45, he had a brief return to race riding in 2007, riding in a couple of bumpers before finally hanging up his boots
In 2007, he also completed his trainer’s course at The British Racing School prior to taking out a combined licence in 2008. Within the first couple of months of training he had trained three winners and several placed horses.

AMATEUR jockey Michael Purcell was yesterday banned for 50 days and fined E2,000 - a record suspension and unprecedented financial penalty for an amateur rider - at Cork under the non-trier rule, writes Brian Fleming. Purcell, a Limerick-based auctioneer, was hammered under Rule 212 for not attaining the best possible placing on Laetitia, who was runner up behind her Charles Byrnes trained stablemate Alpha Royale in the first division of the bumper.
Laetitia went down by a length to her stablemate, who started at 7-1 after being well supported, but at one point had looked certain to wear down the eventual winner.
After a 75-minute stewards' inquiry, Purcell's mount was banned from racing for 60 days, but Byrnes escaped any penalty after giving his evidence, having claimed he was not satisfied with Purcell's ride. His explanation was noted by the stewards.

Pizarro was a truly diabolical decision. The roar went up in the ring when the result stood. A truly horrendous decision.
Jamie Spencer rode Pizarro and it should have been thrown out and apparently he was in a rush to get away to fly to Dubai.
Mark Pitman on Garrison Savannah in the 1991 Gold Cup.....although the ride on him in the Grand National that year was quite memorable too I suppose.

Beltran de Osorio y Diez de Rivera, the “Iron” Duke of Albuquerque (1919-1994), was a Spanish aristocrat obsessed with horse-racing. After receiving a film of the Grand National as a gift for his eighth birthday, the Corinthian Duke set his sight on England’s greatest equestrian prize: “I said then that I would win that race one day,” he later recalled. He nearly died trying.
The amateur jockey entered the National seven times with impressively consistent results. Generally he would start with the others, gallop briefly and then wake up in the Royal Liverpool Infirmary (where apparently he always booked a private room when he rode in the race). Each year, Peter O’Sullevan would gravely intone: “And the Duke of Albuquerque’s gone”. On his first attempt in 1952, he fell from his horse at the sixth fence, nearly broke his neck and woke up later in hospital with a cracked vertebra. He tried to win again in 1963, and fell from his horse yet again, this time at the fourth fence. Undeterred, he returned in 1965 but again fell from his horse after it collapsed underneath him, breaking his leg. His ineptitude was so apparent that in 1963 bookies even offered odds of 66-1 – against him even finishing the race atop his horse! He returned in 1973 when his stirrup broke, although he clung on for eight fences before being sent into inevitable orbit. In 1974, after having sixteen screws removed from a leg he had broken after falling in another race, he also fell while training for the Grand National and broke his collarbone. Nevertheless, he then competed in a plaster cast, this time actually managing to finish the race for the only time in his splendid career, but only in eighth (and last) place aboard Nereo: “I sat like sack of potatoes and gave the horse no help” he said after the race. One anecdote from this race is that he barged into Ron Barry at second Canal Turn; Barry said “What the f*** are you doing?”, to which he replied: “My dear chap I haven’t a clue…I’ve never got this far before!” In 1976, he sustained his most serious injuries after being trampled in a race by several other horses. He suffered seven broken ribs, several fractured vertebrae, a broken wrist and thigh, and a major concussion, and was in a coma for two days. After recovering he announced, at the age of 57, that he planned to race yet again. Race organizers wisely revoked his license “for his own safety”. It has later been said that the Duque was not so bad after all -to finish eighth at the Grand National whilst in a cast is a formidable feat. However, his ability to command good quality horses owing to his wealth must have grated against professional jockeys, who have to compete against one another for the opportunity.

Dandy Nicholls - Soba Stewards Cup. Everyone said you had to be drawn 25-30. They all went middle to far rail. Dandy bounced the old mare out from Stall 1, stuck like glue to the near rail and bolted up.

Anyone here remember Hill House and Josh Gifford winning the Schweppes in 1967 and being booed even before jumping the last. Never heard so much booing in an unsaddling enclose after a race. Later it was found that the horse could really "dope itself"

Mike Smith in The Breeders Cup on Zenyatta what a fackin shocker...No wonder he broke down in tears at the Press Conference saying he was to blame.....No doubt the worstest Big Race ride you will ever see.
I well remember Hill House and was at Sandown to see him run unplaced the previous Saturday. The booing at Newbury whilst unedifying to listen to was (50 years on) justified.

This has got to be one of the spookiest threads of all time given the thread title, cuz just under 4 hours after the thread had been started, would be a ride that would result in a jockey receiving one of the heftiest disqualifications ever to be dished out for a non-jigger, particularly as I think I'm right in saying there was no evidence of the connections having laid the horse.
The ride was referred to twice on this thread at the time, though doubt anyone expected the jock to receive the punishment he did a couple of months later, and some jocks might have got off with 14 days for failing to take all permissable measures, however, the BHA disqualified Jason Behan for 3 years for his ride on Casela Park.

Spencer on Hawk Wing always comes to mind,I blame him entirely for getting that horse a run in the derby which was painful viewing that wouldn't have happened had he won the Guineas and that shytehawk Ferguson wouldn't have mopped up all those easy mile G1's.

Duke of Alberquerqe wasn't on Grey Sombrero, it was Bill Shoemark, Kieren and Conor's grandad, the Duke was on Nereo

Just reading this thread, some of you mentioned George Mernagh, I remember him riding as an amateur on the point to point circuit before heading to England. He died about 5 years ago if memory serves.
As for Pat Leech, if I'm correct there were two Pat Leech's. One of them rode for Martin Pipe when he started training and won the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham 66/1. One of them may have spelt his name Leach but the guy who rode for Martin Pipe was not the fellow who rode for Noel Meade as far as I remember.
Hard to get info on Racing Post it only goes back so far and even at that I have come across jockeys and trainers who have namesakes and as a result their records are all contorted.

The jockey who rode Baron Blakeney in the Triumph was Paul Leach. Jockeypedia is usually a good source for this kind of info but he is not mentioned (George hasn't got round to including everyone!!) There is a John Leech on there who rode in the north of england and in Foinavons National.
Well Paul Leach was the jockey who rode for Baron Blakeney for Martin Pipe and may have been his stable jock for a while in the early days. He is not to be confused with Pat "Shorty" leech who rode for Noel Meade mentioned above.

Thats the one FF,remember sitting in a bar that day looking at the RP.My said "I wonder if that is Davey Jones the Monkee" He remembered him being an apprentice,we had a bet but not until after the race did we realise it was he.

That was Jim Wilson who rode him 3 times. Pat colville won on him in 1973
