Blew start completely on first two runs as a juvenile, but showed some talent from that point on under considerate rides. I was hoping for a stinking not off on the third run, but sadly they tried to teach him a bit at Newbury, where he ran a solid race - again tenderly handled - and earned a mark of 73.
He did look a touch fizzy as a juvenile, and obviously green at the start, so no surprise to see him gelded over the winter. Nice looking horse, he has improved physically from two to three, and looked much more the finished article last time at Lingfield. Breaking noticeably well, he and the winner (probably useful) travelled notably well throughout and pulled miles clear. Time good. Up 5lbs for that, absolutely fair enough, given visually he looked a different proposition, in attitude particularly, to his 2yo self. Like most of Balding's, he'll improve a little for the run, and I suspect he'll make up into a fairly decent handicapper this season. Here he faces a few unexposed rivals, but plenty of them are drawn in the car park - yesterday's card showed, once again, that the Lingfield straight course retains one of the most pointed and long-standed draw biases in racing. Boxed in 18, and likely to race prominently, it's hard to see how he won't be in the frame, and might even get the lot. You never know. |
