if you format the cells first with 'text' as format

you will be able to do this

rossoner

do the formatting first of the cells the data is to go in and you will be fine.

no good putting data in then trying to format after.

When: 07 May 10 19:31
i want to sort the finishing positions then odds just a to z descending just to get all 5 runners then all 6 etc
By:

i get you

you'd have to sort by decimal odds which would mean after you've copied and pasted.

inserting a column to the lft of your data and copying the decimal odds column data to fit in it.

you can then sort all the data from that ?

i've now got the decimal sp odds in column A with prices going down the sheet from lowest to highest.

is that what you are after ?

column b is text odds ie 4-11 which is obviously ascending with column a.

column c is then runners and d wins

If you copy the prices from  and paste special as text the data should transfer exactly as copied

Copy the data and paste (as normal not paste special etc) into a worksheet.

Then while the pasted data is still selected copy and in another worksheet paste special, text

lol he's got to the point where the text odds problem has been sorted.

he wasnts to sort his columns now, and that obviously is not possible with odds like 4-11, 7-4 etc.

so i have shown that they need to be sorted from decimal odds

I see. To calculate line by and sort, I think you'd need to use a programming language - It can be done fairly quickly in Perl and PL/SQL. You may be able to do it in VBA too.

forgive me anf ( after istanbul u owe me this much!!) im followin ur advice cant get it without manual tamperin how u copy a column when in text?
By:

When: 07 May 10 20:02
after you've copied from massey and done the paste special...

in column a you have text odds yes ?

insert a column so that column a shifts over to the right.

in the blank column copy the'sp decimal odds data' into the new blank column a.

your column A now is decimal odds, you can then obviously apply a filter to sort this.?

do you want what i have shown in the table i posted earlier or am i getting it wrong what you actually want?
By:
rossoneri92
When: 07 May 10 20:05
no the table was fine just the copying to col a is gettin me so after i copy i have it in text do i just highlight the price eg 2/1 and then move 2 a?
By:
anfieldkings
When: 07 May 10 20:10
right have you inserted a column in the sheet so that column a is now blank and b is sp odds, c is runners etc.. ?
By:
anfieldkings
When: 07 May 10 20:13
once you have a blank column a...

click on the h of column h and the whole of the data in that column is selected.

then use copy and just paste into the blank column a

obviously you then have column a as decimal odds and you can sort this from low to high or high to low ?

format cell (CTR+;1)--> text
By:

When: 07 May 10 20:15
after this you will have a table that looks like the one i posted earlier where the data is sorted by decimal odds in ascending order.
