St Nicholas Abbey - Sensational winner of the RP Trophy, trained by the champion, ridden by the man for the big day, bred to improve considerably at 3. The fact that two of the horses he laughed at last year are rated amongst the biggest dangers says it all. You can't have another legend of the turf appearing so soon after Sea the Stars apparently - shame nobody told Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef that the year after Nijinsky. The SNA train to immortality sets off today, be on it.
Elusive Pimpernel - Top class 2yo whose only defeat came when unsuited by the ground in the RP Trophy. His previous Acomb victory is as solid a piece of form as you could wish to see and he looks to have improved considerably from 2 to 3 judged by his spectacular victory in the Craven.
Awzaan - Top class 2yo, undefeated and with speed to burn. Some have doubted his ability to get the trip but connections have no such doubts and have won Guineas with less likely types than this.Could be some machine at a mile.
Canford Cliffs - Looked a freak at 2 with his Coventry victory having to be seen to be believed. His jockey has considered him the best he has ridden from day one, and his multi Guineas winning trainer concurs. Narrow defeats on unsuitable ground in France, and when half fit at Newbury do little to diminish confidence.
Fencing Master - Ran an absolute blinder in The Dewhurst despite his inexperience and could be a completely different animal this year. Theoretically the stable number 2 but so were the likes of Rock of Gibraltar.
Conclusion - Move over 1984, we're laughing at you 1980, 1971 - most of your runners would have been ballotted out of today's race. Here it is folks, the greatest Guineas of them all, a race so packed with quality the winner can automatically lay claim to the title Greatest Miler of all time.

St Nicholas Abbey - Decent soft ground staying 2yo, who was campained as a soft ground stayer and is bred as a soft ground stayer. Granted normal improvement could figure in The Derby but has as much chance of winning today as Denman would have of winning a Champion Hurdle. On hard ground. At Fakenham.
Elusive Pimpernel - Think of the great Guineas winners and there M.O - then realise that all this travelling sweetly, cruising through, quickening away nonsense is a red herring. What you want is a horse like this, just watch him today as he struggles to go the early pace, is ridden to hold his (poor) position, fails to pick up quickly enough to take the gaps, is swithched wide and plugs on for, I dunno, let's say 9th. His battling win in what was effectively a claimer at the Craven meeting isn't fooling anyone. Awzaan - Decent Northern sprinter whose narrow victories over horses who weren't even considered for today has somehow convinced connections to go for a vastly superior race over a trip he won't stay. One can only assume it is the first stage of a plan to get him down to a competitive weight by the time the Ayr Gold Cup comes around. Two weeks ago there was nothing between him and Arcano - now that the latter has shown he isn't within two stone of the form required, Awzaan is apparently certain to be in the first four - form taxi for Richard..... Canford Cliffs - Fast, precocious 2yo who had been caught up by his contempraries by late Summer, will have been passed by them over the winter, and whose efforts to keep with them over a mile today will frankly be embarrassing. The best horse Hughes has ever ridden?? He MAY be the best horse he rides today. If they withdraw Elnawin. Fencing Master - Second best in his stable in The Dewhurst, morally third. In all probability about tenth in the overall pecking order at Ballydoyle behind the favourite, those that have been aimed at other targets and those that have met with (cough cough) setbacks. There is a name for a horse with such credentials - pacemaker. Conclusion - Quite possibly the worst Guineas field I can remember, with the winner likely to be given a mark that doesn't rule out a career in handicaps. I am tempted to place lay the field as i'm not even convinced many will complete the course |
