It was the quality of the opposition he mullered that day on the bridle that makes it special 4 me.

by some way the best winner of the 2,000 guineas in the last 35 years,on the day itself kings best was very impressive indeed but the opposition was no where near as strong.

Hi Jimnast . Thats what I like about Troys Derby(never got full credit but as good a Derby performance ive seen) not just the style but the quality of opposition that got mullered.

Pebbles was a wonderful filly but probably at best over mile and a quarter,

imperious in the champion stakes :)

Pebbles best form was over 10-12f though, her mile form wasnt that special, her champion stakes win is one of my favourite races

she still won the 1,000 guineas though.

back to troy geoff i always feel both him and sinndar were never really given the credit as to how good they were.

yes he did geoff after epsom he won the ascot derby ,as a 4 year old he left guy harwood and went to the major where he won the eclispse ,king george and was placed in paris.

His son Rodrigo De Triano was also a fantastic horse - my personal fave.

Jimnast/Geoff - playing Devil's advocate here as it was strictly before my time but.....with Ela Mana Mou being a different horse at 4, and Northern Baby, Dickens Hill and Tap on Wood being better at shorter, and with Troy being horribly outpaced before arguably outstaying them is there not an argument for saying it wasn't one of THE great performances?

gerard some little theory i have always had about epsom in 1979 is that the remarkable turn of foot shown by troy could be tributed to something that happened around 2 furlongs out,

thats right zilzal i ended up in the chinnese in newmarket high street on the sunday night of that arc weekend and in walked george duffield to around of cheering,i also cheered as i had back wizard king that sunday afternoon which he had rode in ireland.
