By coincidence I knew the lad that led Jibereen up at the time (Barry ex stable lads boxing champ), did some good horses at Geoff Lewis's. Mind you every one he took to the races was going to win, remember horse called My Tony won us a few quid. Had it off every August Bank Holiday at Epsom in the early 90's in the Amateur's Derby (Moet & Chandon) with a Spanish amateur riding for John Sutcliffe & Willie Hastings-Bass (3 wins out of 4). Standing dish. Took plenty off Dudley Roberts, ( Colin Webster & The Rabbit (John Henwood). Had good connections in the right yards at Epsom at that time, nearly all moved on now. By the way, hows the crown court case going? |

Probably by sight, knew a flapping bookie "Long Dick", stood on the Downs & Trundle Hill fiddling etc.. He had a market stall in Brixton selling toys, kitchen wares and the like, my mum used to buy from him, long while ago though. Had it off big with Aventino (JS jr.) at Newmarket in the 2yo seller, first race on the card. Had to wait for the 3rd. to be run to get paid out. Didn,t have pockets or money belt large enough for the wedge, and it was a hot day. |

Had a boat in the Marina, so only used to go in the betting shop to watch races or see results. Bet too big for betting shops. Another story, one morning back in early 90's saw Geoff Lewis wearing his check cap, driving his Merc. with a stable lad in Rottingdean on Brighton race day. Lad goes into small independent betting shop (gone now) in High Street, places bet....follow him to Coral's at Saltdean, then Ladbrokes in Peacehaven. (He had probably already done Beeny's in Woodingdean). Went to the course that afternoon and Lewis's horse hosed up. |

Was on Ile de Chypre that day (6/1 to 4/1), thought the horse had broken down, ie. broke a shoulder. Knew travelling head lad for GH name of Tony Winsor, he'd throw the rug to a workman after horse had gone down to get to the ring for a decent bet, always followed him in. Biggest Royal Ascot win was on Sikorsky (JS jr.) in the Bessborough ridden by The Shoe. Had to survive a stewards, laid some of it off, enquiry took 15 minutes. Mad house after the Shoe was given the benefit of the doubt, last race trying to collect bundles before everyone left. Only arrived at the course as the Queens Vase was being run, blagged our way in for free, that gave me even more satisfaction than winning a lump. |

The quiet ones!....need to keep a low profile these days...easier with BF & others. In the old days it was the likes of Duggie Matthews, Alex Ross, Alex Gorrie (with Penny & John Ff-H), Dodger McC, regulars on the circuit. Like a travelling army on the southern tracks. Used to cost me about 16k expenses from April to November Flat season, in entry fees, hotels, meals, travelling etc. before I won a carrot. Sometimes plot one up for Ayr, Musselbrough, Pontefract or Leicester. Could get plenty on before they realised who I was. Mickey (A-kid) Fletcher sussed me one day, but kept shtumm.....he just followed me in. |

Epsom bookie called Dyer, is it the same? Punted from when I was a kid, had a McLaughlan's postal account when I was 12. My dad encouraged me, said it was good maths. Rode work when I was a skinny 15yo (7stone), got too heavy after a few years and shot up to 6ft.. Didn't fancy the jumps game and preferred a lay-in of a morning. Good education though ! |

Know Alan Spence who had horses with Reg A and was stitched up by Carter.His notoriety was he cleared a £250,000 tote liability with a yankee....was in all the papers. Now lives as a tax exile in SA, but has a large string with Amanda P. & Mark J., plus stud interests. |

They will wipe the floor with me every time" Picture in RP shows the following prices for George Simmons and Banks: 1/3 - 0.33 11/1 - 10.0 33/1 - 33.0 20/1 - 16.0 33/1 - 25.0 14/1 - 14.0 12/1 - 11.0 I do appreciate that it may be to do with the fact that Banks offers E/W and Simmons doesn't but it doesn't look very competitive to the newby racegoer does it? |
