FACT. RP reported that RUK has more than 40K subscribers even more than when they 1st launched in 2,004.
FACT. If that is true RUK not affected by globall financial downturn
FACT. RUK costs about the same as a barely decent bottle of win

ruk do a good job of covering racing well of that there is no doubt but they need to be aligned to something else like they where with setanta otherwise the only people who will watch it are the very insular people who belong to the racing world.most people unless they need it have better things to do with their money in the current economic climate, where are their future viewers going to come from if they exclude anyone new from even seeing racing.

scarecrow makes sense. setanta used to be about £10-£15 and included ruk as well, which was value and people who wouldnt necessarily bet on racing may have watched. now, at £20 with none of the other sports thrown in, only hardcore racing fans will pay for it.

Scarecrow is spot on. All very well for the people who are full time now , but nobody goes from zero knowledge/interest to being full time overnight.
If i'd never seen Racing on TV i doubt i'd ever have had a bet on it , and there was a hell of a lot more on BBC/C4 at the time i became interested . I certainly wouldn't have paid £20 a month on the off chence i might develop a liking for it, and no one will today, so who is going to be following it in 30 years time if things carry on like this?

Get it from Nov-April for Cheltenham build up and Aintree, then stop it till following November, costs 10 per month then over a year!! At least they dont make us have a yearly contract!!

Can't see what all the fuss is about? £5 a week is peanuts compared to what most of you stake/lay a day. Anyway, we've had this thread about a hundred times now, move on......

The point being missed is that £20 per month for one channel to the person who has a passing interest is ludicrous.
Like cycling? well tune into the cycling channel for £20 per month. Doesnt happen, cycling is covered very well on Eurosport
Like Football? Tune into the football channel for £20 per month. Of course not, Football part of Sky Sports. Even Espn have it bundled with other stuff.
So the questions are
Should racing have a stand alone channel which it charges £20 per month? or Should racing be part of a bundled package?( as earlier pointed out by scarecrow)
Was RUK watched more whilst under Setanta's umbrella?
Personally, racing should be behind the red button. Several screens with each meeting covered. Parade ring on another screen. Live market on another and so on.

One can say lots of things about RUK but compared to other pay tv it certainly can't be called good value! Do they still have minute long plugs for bookies every 5 mins?

I thought they were going to stop them when they bought subs in? If it was 1 racing channel that showed all the racing (on red button for clashes) that gave insights into racing - showed/made documentaries, stable tours etc regularly and had no adverts then £20 would just about be worth it but as it is the odd time i watch it now it still looks cheap (no matter how good some think the analysis is).

Racing is for toffs like us. Do you really want a channel that council house, benefit **s can watch? I certainly don't. £20 for 20 days is priced perfectly just above the chav's media budget. ;)

One channel would eventually drop cards, you would end up with three or four live cards a day with adverts, the rest would be shown as recordings later in the day.

I ain't home most days but record it and make notes every night... invaluable.
It's all relevent I spoze but if you punt I consider 80p ish per day to be ok.
Why anyone should think it should be cheaper is beyond me.
I hear all those saying it was cheper before but look what happened to that lot at Sultana ;)
OK value in my eyes and whoever they put on the bright sparks on here would slaughter so that argument is dead imo
Don't like it... don't buy it...simples...IT IS NOT YOUR RIGHT TO HAVE IT FREE ;)

To me it's like people complaining that they can't buy their food in M&S like I do. Tory Govt coming so nothing wrong with a Tory TV Channel like RUK.
If you don't fancy £20 a month go and live in North Korea ;)

Joker - the thing is it doesn't encourage people to racing and keeps it very insular, it's not a question of if somebody who gambles regularly thinks it's good value but if somebody new to racing thinks it is imo. If you were looking to choose pay tv (as many are atm) and you were moderately interested in racing would you consider £20 value?

Expensive compared to the setanta package but as a serious racing fan, or fan of serious facing, you can't afford to be without it (as opposed to a daily RP which costs more than twice as much).
My major complaint is their complete inability to return calls or deal with problems.

Zab - prem football has a massive viewing public so could pretty much charge what they wanted but even if there was only 1 channel that showed all the matches would they charge much more than £20 a month? Racing simply doesn't have the viewing public to justify £20 to most casual observers and at that price won't attract (m)any newcomers - why didn't rfc try and get ruk to give this week free as part of the free racing week?.

Chemical, I would gladly pay £40 a month to have all the racing on RUK instead of half of it on ATR. This is because I am a full time punter and the coverage is much more professional and helpful on RUK, plus the pictures are a bit faster so if I want to adjust my position in running then RUK is also better for doing that. When somebody is playing for hundreds of pounds a race £20 is a drop in the ocean. I hope this answers your question.

A dedicated racing channel will NEVER entice a new audience mate ..it is too specialist to do so..FACT
Mainstream TV is the only medium that will do that or getting people to the course and treating them properly.
On course thieving bookies raping them at every turn will not help and piiiss stained toilets along with £4 a pint and £5 for a greasy burger will not either...
How about attracting the earlt 20's and teens with special offers

People who are too cheap to pay for RUK should be banned from starting the same boring threads every saturday about what sh*te C4 or BBC coverage is...we allknow it that is why we have RUK ... and to watch on the days when it is not covered by C4,BBC, or ATR.

Why cant they make more shows other than just showing endless repeats on blank days? Stable tours, profiles, behind the scenes, classic races/festivals etc, something, anything.
If you're a serious punter, 20 quid is fine for a few hours action every other day or whatever it averages out at, but for a racing fan, it's off-puttingly limited imo.

Supposeit all depends on what you bet, £20 is probably my minimum bet soruk would be about 5% of my monthly betting bank, not a lot to watch your selections is it.
