and do you target certain races to lay in?

How high in odds do you lay mate? I'm not a fan of laying but if I am I never go above 3's.

true. works the same way with backing with me as well. Even if i know the horse will win, I never back below evens. Also learned to acknowledge when odds are too big and put the same stake on that you would if it was shorter. There was a time I was putting less on because it was 20/1 etc. even though I knew it had the best chance. then being gutted I never put more on.

If you see a return you are doing it right. as long as you accept the liability that could be lost. easy way to the poor house if you get a bad run.

try sticking to a formula if you cant afford the time to study proper,laying in running is always the best you can judge on what you see and 9 times out of ten you will be right .formula wise you could say pick handicaps 12 runners or more and stick to laying the 3rd horse in the betting say it wont be ideal but it will produce long winning runs as you will need

you can lay grands in running depending on the length of the race 1m2f no probs 5f a little harder but you could get a grand laid easy

usually better to lay in running because the odds will drop. especially if you have full confidence that it won't win or stay. unless in sprints it gets a bad start out the stalls where its better to lay before.

a cover back is always handy, the amount of times i have layed a horse at 2's, 3's and it drops to 30's, 40's but ends up getting up at the end. backing small at higher odds is a great saver. happens more often than you think.

lay to back is the best way to trade if you can, for instance lay at 3's before start and back at 5's for instance in running and get a guaranteed green out profit then the result dosent matter

got the message ed dont gamble lay and stick to your guns unless you are part of the 2% club and get quality info then you can back dont be a degenerate lay the feck out of them you will have good and bad spells but in the end you will always win as the old saying goes you never see a bookie on a bike hehe

I had a succesful run of 19 winning bets, mainly lays, but including a 15-2 winner a couple of years back and on G National Day I had a run of 15 winning bets, 14 lays + the GN winner. I generally take on horses priced at 4-1 or less, but by no means randomly.
One thing I've learned over the years is to look for value. My speciality, if you like is to lay overvalued horses that are not bred, or do not have the form for the prevailing ground and/or distance, that are badly hcpd etc etc and are imo far too short a price. I listen to people like Ken Pitterson, he has a great strike rate with paddock picks and more importantly he knows when a horse needs the run. Like many punters I've had great days and disasterous ones, but since Betfair came about and since I learned to use it to my advantage, the disasterous days are far fewer. |
