Is this the same mob from 2008 in Brighton:
A racing tipster duped punters out of £175,000 with phoney betting services. Around 3,000 people paid for information from experts with made-up names after they were sent glossy pamphlets full of fake statistics and worthless promises. The gamblers were told they could "cut out money worries forever" by relying on the advice of the "four most influential people in racing". In fact they were betting on the fancies of Wesley Beagley, an amateur boxer from Whitehawk. Now the scam has been closed down after Trading Standards and a High Court judgement barred him from using the fake adverts. In one mail-shot Mr Beagley, then 29, claimed to be Michael Rose, a pundit with 30 years' experience in the racing industry. One service, with a fee of £195, offered "over £300,000 profit or your money back". In another he said he was Anthony Cochrane, a fictitious jockey who owned a team of racing horses and had until recently ridden "regularly for some of the biggest and most successful trainers in England" as well as being involved with "some of the biggest gambles in racing history". A third advertising campaign touted the skills of non-existent insider Jonathan Wells. Mr Beagley told The Argus he agreed to stop advertising last year after Trading Standards got involved. He said: "I was tipping horses a long time ago, which is perfectly legal. "You try to sell your product. "I had problems with Trading Standards." He said he has now become a builder and has not run the tipping service for six months. Mike Lambourne, of the Office of Fair Trading's Scambusters team, led the investigation. He told The Argus: "These aren't the only fake mailings in circulation. They are quite common. "They all use similar techniques." He said common advertising tools include limited-time-only offers and promises that refunds will be given if the lines do not hit high success rates. Mr Lambourne said: "These guarantees are worthless. The mailings are very glossy and look very professional. "They give you deadlines, they don't want people to think about these things." The team has sent out consumer advice to 12,000 gamblers warning them about similar scams. Beagley could face a fine, jail or seizure of his assets if he breaches a High Court injunction granted in December. Mike Haley, the head of consumer protection at the OFT, said: "These were highly misleading mailings that used fictitious names and false claims to lure consumers into sending money in the believe that they would make large profits from a tipster service. "We will continue to crack down on similarly misleading mailings." British Horseracing Authority spokesman Paul Struthers said: "The OFT's Scambusters team have our full support and we will continue to work closely with them to ensure that those who use the lure of racing to try to con innocent people out of their hard earned money are stopped." Consumers who are unsure about claims being made in mailings should contact Consumer Direct for clear, practical advice on 0845 4040506 or visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk. How can people be so naive........All tipsters are chancers!....get real ! |
