Some great names of steeplechasing have won the Whitbread inc Arkle Mill House Pas Seul The Dikler, but my personal favourite has to be the 1984 WGC winner Special Cargo, the last winner for the great Fulke Walwyn in the colours of the Queen Mum. Anyone who hasn't seen this race has missed probably the most exciting jump race ever imo, that thrilling uphill finish with 4 or 5 in with a chance over the last, looked like Diamond Edge would win it for the 3rd time only to be collared on the uphill climb by Lettoch and Special Cargo who looked to have no chance 2 out getting up on the line.
was a young fella on a day trip to Portsmouth wathing them play Liverpool...had a weeks wages on Guy Landau... saw the result after the match and was my biggest single win at the time....only later did i see the ride and how the hell did he sit THAT mistake

Oh yes, that Arkle victory will always be remembered by all.
As I recall, on the morning of the race Arkle was stranded in Calais having been out on a stag weekend with a stag. French lorry drivers had blockaded the port, meaning Arkle could not get back to make his engagement over the Esher fences.
It was at around midday that Arkle realised the ignorant pigs would not be budging and where his ticket to get back would be rendered useless. Arkle being the wonder-champion put on his best swimming trunks and swam the Englsih channel in a record time of 7 seconds, under a record weight of 37 stones (self imposed 25 stone penalty).
Upon reaching Dover, Arkle then realised he had a mere 30 mins to get to Sandown - being Arkle, just for the fun of it, he decided to roly poly the journey back to Sandown just in time for the pre race parade.
As I recall, under regular jockey Freddy Maghoo Arkle won the race 4 distances having fallen 7 times under a self imposed 3 stone penalty, beating Lord Chumley.
One thing is for sure, Arkle sure earned his mint imperials that evening lol.

Daimond Edge's 2 wins , nearly 3. One of the best not to win a Gold Cup.

Joker, Landaus recovery was amazing, winning after that must have been sweet.
I'll never forget Harwell Lad, Eulogy, Hot Weld, Monkerhostin, and Hennesy....happy days!
Race has went a bit downhill classwise last few years, but I still love it!

Yes the Special Cargo race was one of the great jump races. One of the best finishes I've seen.
Carvillahow - backed him and still can't believe he lost the race in the Stewards room - so that would be my least favourite.
Also backed Plundering and Hennessey for their wins, but Monkerhostin's win two years ago put a smile on my face.
Off to Sandown tomorrow for the first time and hoping for a Hobbs win.
