You may have gone to bed by the time I answered ...

Onlooker - was William the Third (but still not sure the race in question was that Eclipse) I believe that William III was owned by Musker, who retained Otto Madden the rider of Ard Patrick. Anyhow a friend of mind has an original telegram from Madden to Musker requesting "would you be in agreement for me to ride Ard Patrick and not William Third".

Have not got the 1903 Calendar to hand, blackbarn - probably in the bottom of a box in the loft.

Wiilliam the Third - was runner-up in the 1901 Derby - and also won the Newmarket Stakes ( mile and a quarter ) in 1901 -
and then - in 1902 ... won The Queen Alexandra ( 2m 6f ) at Royal Ascot - and the Doncaster Cup ( 2m 2f )

Hard to see it reverting to a mile and a quarter for the 1903 Eclipse .... but they ran over all kinds of distances in those days -

although, Madden would have been 'mad' not to choose Ard Patrick in the Eclipse - given the above.

onlooker,

can I ask you another one

why is it when you look up the old boy Antonin, Sue Bramalls on RP, the jockey shows as

J 'Old' Burke
Report onlooker • April 23, 2010 10:32 PM BST
That would be because there is/has been another/other J Burke since he ( JOHN Burke ) rode Antonin ...

so, they have identified him as J 'Old' Burke - meaning the first J Burke on their database - as shown in their Jockeys Search/Listing below ..

JOCKEYS (40)

1. » B Burke
2. » Barry M Burke
3. » Betsy Burke
4. » F Burke
5. » J 'Old' Burke

However - as JULIE Burke has always been know as such - it does appear somewhat superfluous
-------------------------------
This will have come to light due to horses being given the same name as a predecessor, some 290 or more, years earlier. ...

Whereby - the Racing Post system simply OVERWROTE the original horse with the new one .... and the original horses records were lost. :(

Most galling when at top handicapper from 20 years ago was replaced with some Class 6 plodder nowadays. :(

Of course - the geeks would not have thought about that scenario manifesting itself when writing the original programs - witness the shambles when the geeks changed the site to the 'new ' :) one.

Going for a pint shortly - need one. :)
