The more noise made, the more likely something will get done. Thousands of people pass through this forum, yet nobody does anything, even though many of us don't like how regular bookmakers act.

Agree with Sparrow - if you have a problem with these machines do not use them. Govt can't ban everything that is harmful and has more important tasks on the agenda. Only a deluded idiot would think they could win on them.

Then again they probably think the same of me on here!!!!

Yoyo....how much on average would you say you put into betting exchanges each year? Obviously must be very little given your disgust of them.........

As I understand it the growth of FOBTs combined with relaxations of the planning rules have encouraged the big chains to have more shops in the high street, diluting the amount of sports betting in each shop. Basically for most shops sports betting, not just horses but even including football, is not viable on its own. This is very hard on genuine independent bookmakers who find their income from betting not viable, they cannot get such good terms as the big chains on the FOBTs, and their leases are worthless.
Perhaps it would be good to allow local authorities to restrict the number of FOBTs on their high streets, to one per every so many 1000 population, if they wanted to.
This would curb their growth and the big bookies would hate it, but it would be good for the independent bookmakers.
The big chains would still be allowed to open as many shops as they liked, but would not be able to get FOBTs in new shops where the local authorities did not want more FOBTs. So they would have to make genuine betting attractive to punters if they wanted to expand their operations.
