I can never understand PAID retainers for these '(un)necessary incumbents'.

They get a percentage of ALL prize money - Win AND Place - perhaps they all should pay the trainers and owners for that privilege .... rather than the other way around.

I sort of Understood when Pat Eddery, Steve Cauthen , Fallon, Murtagh and Dettori got retainers. Top owners paid top dollar to make sure top jock was riding

Richard Hills, Alan Munro, Richard Hughes .... If your horse was good enough, you could attract as good a jock with no retainer imo

I'm sure Richard Hughes was on £1m retainer for Kahlid Abdullah until he was rightly binned
