Viewed, the $50,000 weanling Bart Cummings turned into a $6 million prizemoney earner, died of a twisted bowel on Saturday.
''Bart and [owner Dato Tan] Chin Nam were very upset,'' said Duncan Ramage, who has been Dato Tan's racing manager for 28 years.
Viewed gave Cummings his 12th Melbourne Cup and helped to make Dato Chin Nam the most successful owner in the history of the Big One.
Apart from the 2008 Melbourne Cup, Viewed, a six-year-old stallion, had also been successful in the Brisbane Cup and last year's Caulfield Cup. Viewed was at Dato Tan Chin Nam's Think Big Stud at Bowral, and another spring campaign, again centred on the Caulfield and Melbourne cups, had been planned for him.
''We were confident he would do well and decided against retiring him to the stud, although there were a number of inquiries from breeders wanting to send mares to him,'' Ramage said.
''Viewed promised to continue the Scenic line and surely would have been worthwhile to our racing being Australian with the potential to produce good middle-distance horses.''
Cummings has been involved in millions being spent on the progeny of silk department stallions, but he and Dato Tan went along with Ramage's judgment to buy Viewed after he discovered him in a paddock at Wisemans Ferry.
As a five-year-old, Viewed, ridden by Blake Shinn, scored by a nose in a memorable Melbourne Cup finish. Cummings felt renovation to Flemington played a role.
''What was formerly a 10-minute walk had turned into four times that length, a three-kilometre trek around the far side of the course so we could get in,'' he wrote in his memoirs, Bart. ''It annoyed the staff at first but you can't go wrong doing more walking in life. The extra exercise turned out to be vital for Viewed because of the difficulties he had to overcome.''
