Canford is ready to roll

Richard Hannon does not do nerves (at least he never shows it), but the Herridge camp will be "walking their box" over the next 24 hours as Canford Cliffs' dress-rehearsal for the 2000 Guineas comes ever closer.

Last year's runaway Coventry Stakes winner is odds-on to consolidate his classic claims in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, and Richard confesses that it is a case of "so far so good".

He declared:"Everyone knows how highly we rate Canford Cliffs. We have said that he is the best we've had and he looked awesome at Royal Ascot last year, but now he has to go and prove that he is as good, and maybe even better, as a three-year-old.

"The Guineas is his main target, so this is merely the dress-rehearsal and he has been off since Deauville last August. But, that said, he is a clean-winded horse who should be fit enough to do himself justice in this trial.

"Canford Cliffs has filled out through the winter and we were pleased with his gallop with Paco Boy and Soul City last week-end. He idled a bit but they are two good horses he was coming up with, so we were happy enough.

"Obviously, Arcano, who finished just in front of us in the Prix Morny, will be a big danger, but our fellow's preparation has gone smoothly and we are going up the road with no penalty, so there will be no excuses. The professionals are telling me that he'll prove to be a sprinter, but none of us here are going along with that theory. Ideally, he'll get a lead as he will settle better with it, but he has started to relax during the close season, and Hughesie knows him well."

However, Richard, who is also fearful of John Gosden's Bullwhip, stresses that Dick Turpin, who also makes his reappearance in this race, "could be the surprise packet."

He added:"If we did mot have Canford Cliffs, we'd be more than happy to claim Dick Turpin as our number one Guineas contender. He was a big two-year-old and has really blossomed through the winter, filling out in all the right places. Forget his last two runs at the back-end, he is far better than that, and he has been working well this spring."
Report Cream Of The Crop April 16, 2010 10:30 PM BST
You sure? I thought Canford Cliffs was giving Paco Boy 45lbs and a 30 length start, yet still managed to breeze past him heavily restrained on the bit? Dat's wot eye herd. :|

Arcano
Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Hamdan Al Maktoum: "The form is there to see and he won the Morny on his last start. He has been off a long time and we are sure he will need the run but everyone has been happy with him at home and we obviously hope he runs well."

Bullwhip
John Gosden, trainer: "He won his maiden at Doncaster but there are no races for him to run in. He would have to run against older horses or in his own group at levels and this will give us the chance to get another run into him and get some prize money."

Canford Cliffs
Richard Hannon, trainer: "Everyone knows how highly we rate him. We have said that he is the best we've had and he looked awesome at Royal Ascot last year, but now he has to go and prove that he is as good, and maybe even better, as a three-year-old. The Guineas is his main target, so this is merely the dress-rehearsal and he has been off since Deauville last August. The professionals are telling me that he'll prove to be a sprinter, but none of us here are going along with that theory. Ideally, he'll get a lead as he will settle better with it, but he has started to relax during the close season, and Richard Hughes knows him well."

Dick Turpin
Richard Hannon, trainer: "If we did not have Canford Cliffs, we'd be more than happy to claim Dick Turpin as our number one Guineas contender. He was a big two-year-old and has really blossomed through the winter, filling out in all the right places. Forget his last two runs at the backend, he is far better than that, and he has been working well this spring."

Thought I'd throw the contenders in too.

Haha well I had a 33/1 winner tillietudlem 1-45 at Ayr, I was in a generous mood and even shared it on here, you could of stuck your 150 on it's nose instead! Been a crazy 8 days anyway, I don't want the jumps to end! Guess it doesn't with summer jumping, but just not the same. Any big fancies for tomorrow?

Report RyanWe April 16, 2010 11:21 PM BST
I just don't want to get sucked in by the hype. The Hannon team have no idea how good Arcano is do they, just because Meehan's not shouting his mouth off hyping up his horse doesn't mean he's not better. Probably a race to just watch anyway, but if Arcano goes 3's then I'll have a pop, as he definitely has more than 25% of winning.
Report ilikewavingatbuses April 16, 2010 11:22 PM BST

Well I'm pretty big on Gone to Lunch in the Scot Nat.. backed it AP at 16's, I really really fancy this horse. Off 8lb lower than last year when he came 2nd, maybe he's just been running crap, but I really think he's been plotted for this race. His racing weight is also a lot nicer as had to lump 11-10 last year.

Already backed Kangaroo Court at 4/1 with B365 as I have reservations over French Opera at 20f and I think he carries weight really well so hoping he's flattered by solid performances in HC company. FO deserves to be favourite mind, but KC wasn't.. and isn't a 4/1 chance, hence why he's only available at 3/1 now.

Biggest fancy of the day is I'm Delilah in the 4.30 at AYR.. just forget chelt run, only lost a nose to Woolcombe Folly, this horse is miles better than 138. Am sure it will be an uncomplicated ride from the front and will try to drive them in to the ground, 9/2 on betfair atm, I can't believe it's that big.
Report RyanWe April 16, 2010 11:33 PM BST
Looked at the Akmal race.. I feared the trip might be a bit short? And god knows with all these FTO horses. I love the filly Clowance, not sure if trip will be too sharp and ground too quick.. obviously I know she was 4th in the oaks, but definitely wants some cut.

Also, Stoute has a 44% record with 4yos FTO in April who've had less than 7 runs in their career.. the stat is somewhere along those lines. Obviously Harbinger falls in to this category, who I thought was pretty disappointing after Goodwood. I thought I saw an above 40% SR for Cumani's horses FTO in April too. Oh the crazyness.
