why can't some of the jockeys realise this, on some of the best form horses yet do their best to hold them way off the pace

Why can't some punters realize that a hold up horse is just that, and will fall in a heap if asked to front run? Why can't you just work out how the race will be run and back accordingly?

yes i take your point but those held up are not getting to the horses in front therefore sitting closer to the pace would surely be a more realistic option under these circumstances

jockey was after the horse 6 out, had momentum built up whereas others are only getting after their horses 2, 3 out and are expecting their horses to pick up

They were all maidens - very few, if any, in that race with any gears.
