It's just awful when the names you grew up with as a youngster pass away and 70 is still a young age.I was at Epsom to see him get the run on the rails to win the Derby on Shirley Heights, a great ride. R.I.P Greville Starkey.

Only pocket talking Juancars on here drone on about 1 ride on Dancing Brave. good argument for saying that Eddery on El Gran Senor was even worst anyway!

Also great memories of him getting after To Agori when he won 2,000 at HQ.

Was this today? Sad news indeed. I'll never forget him giving hand signals for the benefit of a French jocket in the Goodwood Cup?? due to the layout of the course. I didn't get a RP today and this is the first I've heard of it. I hope the RP gives him tribute he deserves. (looks like they will)

Always remember in the Spring before the Guineas he was asked how Dancing Brave compared with Tou-agori-mou ( multiple G1 and Royal Ascot winner ) He said he is far better which stunned me at the time.

RIP ... I had Ile De Chypre with 2 winners in a Trixie couldnt believe it at the time (vaguely remember backing an Aga Khan horse called Khairpour who did the same back then also). Remember his barking dog sounds at the start life needs characters and he was one.

Awful news and a horrible way to go, you sort of think that these people will be around for ever and ever. Star Appeal winning the Arc was the race that really got me hooked on the sport. I was on the floor playing a board game called Formula 1 at the time and after the race the little cars that I'd given names to such as Perterson, Fittapaldi, Lauda, Hulme, Hunt, Sheckter, Reutermann, suddenly turned into Allez France, On My Way, Star Appeal, Comtesse D'Loir, Card King ect

remember the Shirley Heights derby very well. I now work with a lass who at the time worked in the local Arundel bookies. We were all on Shirley Heights - some at as much as 33/1, meself at 12s.

When it won the bookie did not have enough to pay us all out and we had to wait until the next day.
The pub across the road (Red Lion) - manager was quite happy to let us get pi$$ed up so long as we left our winning tickets behind the bar. We then settled up over the next couple of days as we got paid out.

Very happy days - TY Greville, sadly missed.

Very, very sad indeed...followed him for a long time....can't believe he was 70. Seems like only yesterday.

vey sad news, golden era of racing, harwood and greville were very much a part of it, rode some womderful races and unfairly criticised for the ride at epsom, on a horse that for me didnt really stay12 furlongs .

As a young lad who went to Haydock with my Dad & Grandad, I recall Greville was one of the few jocks who would interact and chat to the paddock crowd. One of my early memories is when he duly spoke to us.

Should never had lost the ride on Dancing Brave, he would've won on him in the King George and the Arc imo.

I was a fan - he used to ride Marwell and Kalaglow, two horses I won good money on.

And I was at Epsom the day he rode Dancing Drave in the Derby and I was DISGUSTED with the flak he got, particuarly off certain people in the pressroom.

He didn't hold it up THAT much, and he wasn't to know the colt wouldn't come down the hill.

If he'd lain up a length closer to the pace or the colt had handled the descent that bit better, he'd have been lauded as a genius the way Piggott was over Sir Ivor.

Under-rated jiockey, though you seldom saw him use his stick in his left hand.

I layed a bet to a great pal of mine,took 1500 quidof me on the August bank holiday,asked me to hold on to it,till the Arc in October,he went the Arc,backed Grevs rag,won 32000! made the headlines our local paper,he also no longer with us,oh happy days.

Different memory from me , remember the great match up between Kings Lake ( Eddery ) & To-Agori-Mou ( Starkey ) in several top class races ( think Kings Lake won the HTH 2-1 in the end ) and the infamous " V " sign in the heat of battle , great racing memories around that time and Mr Starkey is certainly an integral part of some wonderful nostalgia.

I remember the Kings lake/To agori mou battles as well. One of my earliest racecourse memories was the ding dong batlle they had at Goodwood. I did my money that day but always preferred Greville to Eddery.

Mordin - he was in some people's earliest memories of racing in the late 1950's.

Champion Apprentice in 1957 with 45 winners. His competitors for the title were Josh Gifford and "Kipper" Lynch. Edward Hide rode 88 winners that season but finished his apprenticeship mid season.

only just picked up the thread, really sad news, like BWH Greville gave me a leg up winning the Lincoln on FRANCINSENSE all those years ago, RIP a real jockey

First summer holidays from Uni me & mate spent EVERY afternoon in the local Labdrokes & Starkey was a leading player in the Flat scene over that summer.
Best day of what turned out to be an expensive (but on reflection a valuable learning experience) summer was during the Ebor meeting when I followed up a winning forecast in the International (Shardari-Triptych, paid just over £9) by unbelievably getting the Yorkshire Oaks 1-2 as well, with Greville on Stoute's Untold beating Park Express for a dividend over £28.
Usually watched races quite reserved but was giving it the full 'go on Starkey' in the closing stages :-)

i was a fan of grevilles, rip greville.

I don't think he was actually jocked off Dancing Brave after the Derby I think he was suspended when Pat rode him then and kept the ride after. Is that right, or is my memory playing tricks?
Anyway he was a great jockey and I remember him throughout his career. RIP Grev.

One of my late nans favourites. Remember as a young pup her putting 10p ew on Shirley Heights in the Derby for me. Pannini heaven that day and I dont mean the posh sarnie! Rode some wonderful horses, Sadeem, Swiss Maid, Kalaglow, Young Generation, To Agori Mou, Ahonoora, Dancing Brave, Sackford, Rousillon, Soviet Star, Celtic Cone, Homeward Bound, Fair Salinia, Untold, Vaigly Great, Intermission, Primary, Frankincense, Fair Season, Mr Bigmore, Crews Hill, but to name a few.

And as slippyblue says what a magnificent ride to win the Derby on Shirley Heights and beat Willie Shoemaker on Hawaain Sound.

Yes. Very sad.
My first memory of him is riding Merchant Adventurer to be 2nd in The Derby. Given that horses`s later exploits must have been a great ride.
I also remember him riding the very useful flat horse London Gazette over hurdles in the 60s.
In those days he was retained by Oxley and Harry Thomson Jones.
Am I right in thinking his career hit a flat spot before he teamed up with Harwood ( Though I think he was retained by Cecil briefly ).

He rode a lot of good winners for John Oxley. Also rode for Freddie Maxwell and was one of Henry Cecil`s first stable jockeys. Then rode some good winners for a young Michael Stoute before teaming up with Guy Harwood.

A lingering memory for me was one day at Salisbury races, Greville had been beaten on a hot 3yo favourite, trained by Guy Harwood. As they returned to the unsaddling enclosure, Harwood as was his way, lambasted Greville with words intended for everyone to hear, as to how he had not ridden to orders and to what a mess of a ride he had given the horse. I was shocked to hear this public outburst. Greville was apologetic and contrite. Later I spoke to the travelling head lad Martin Winsor and mentioned the trainer's outburst and remarked how Greville a senior jockey had taken it, Martin said don't believe all you see and hear, that was only for the owner's benefit, everyone in the stable was laughing their heads off afterwards.

Greville a nice man, a proper gent to the end. R.I.P.

Forget the Dancing Brave ride - here's Greville at his very best, doing with Shirley Heights what he meant to do with Dancing Brave.
Look out for the pale blue with dark brown sleeves of Lord Halifax, must be 7 or 8 lengths down at 2f out, times it to perfection!

Remember him riding for Oxley in early 60s whenI first started watching TV racing. He rode some good ones like the filly Fiji and Merchant Venturer, 2nd in 1963 Derby. One of the great jockeys from the 60s, and then riding plenty of winners for Michael Stoute in his early training years. My most lasting memory is of all the Harwood 2yos winning first time out at Salisbury or a Newmarket evening meeting ( last race usually).

Very sorry to hear that, had a great career as a jockey in a golden age,
but sadly the one ride that willnever be forgotten is losing the Derby on Dancing Brave.

Remember him riding at Goodwood one day when a french jockey in the race
wasn't sure of the course, and Starkey gave a hand signal when turning at the bend.

One of the funniest moments in Starkey's marvellous career was the sight of him disco dancing completely naked on a table top at a big race celebration party held one night in a local hostelry near Pulborough.
A great character and jockey - they certainly don't make 'em like Greville anymore.

My best memory of Greville was as as a 12 year old I saw him winning the last race on The Court Jester at Bath in July 1964 over the extended 5 furlongs. He came from a long way back to snatch it on the line. There was dust eveywhere so the ground must have been rock hard that day.
