My gripe is with Oppenheimer who runs a 200% + book near the parade ring to catch the unwary. Absolutely scandalously underpriced on EVERY single horse on EVERY single race by about 40%!

Disgusting.
Report Cricketer April 12, 2010 11:50 PM BST
Oppenheimer? sounds like a pan lid. That would explain it.
Report diddles April 13, 2010 12:00 AM BST
Charwell we have to face simple facts of life-- The race course is not where serious money is bet with the exception of Cheltenham.
All course bookmaker play different games - some like to lay small for high %s Others Like B Dennis wants to take 3 times as much as any other bookmaker so he will bet to smaller margins. Some go there for entertainment - The majors lose money with their on course activities but are there to control off course liablity.
Serious punters don't exist on the race course any longer. I for one spent my life trailing from course to course punting - i still go racing but less often - But i never bet with on course bookmakers - most of mines done well before racing starts.
Report charwell. April 13, 2010 12:30 AM BST
Disagree - he gets a pitch near the parade ring with only one other bookie within sight and bets to ridiculous margins to fleece racegoers who aren't odds shrewd. It's disgusting and is not operating a book in any sense of the word. It's like a vulture waiting to swoop. And it gives other bookies a bad name.

My mate had a bet with him not realising he was half the price on every runner. He was seething when I pointed this out and has tarnished his day out feeling as though he was suckered.
Report diddles April 13, 2010 7:06 AM BST
charwell - i do understand your point - But this man buys and also pays rent to stand an offer his wares, hes not a charity shop - your pal has choice he either takes the easy option and bets with the first bookmaker he sees or he goes for a hike to the main ring and shops around. Ita a bit like the local shop who opens 24 hours or Tescos. Its all down to supply - demand and availability.
Bookmakers arnt there to give free lunches- they go to make a living its a jungle- thats why we love it.
Report jimnast April 13, 2010 7:07 AM BST

Its shoppers choice Charwell - some iddiots go to Marks and spencers and pay £2 for 1/2 a pint of 3 month old water packed in a plastic bottle - others turn the tap on and get fresh water for nothing.

Guiness - we have sent well written "pleads" from the Bookmaker Associations to the GC to ask them to reverse their decision on allowing these non-standard place terms. We fully explained the implications, even using their own slogans ("Free and Fair") etc. They are not even remotely interested I'm afraid.

Asking them to intervene because some bookmakers offer uncompetitive odds I dont even agree with, let alone the GC.
Report guinness2dear April 13, 2010 11:18 AM BST

A letter coming from me.Be good if a few others do also.

Complained to ASA about the 365 ad.The decision as expected was that the ad would not be stopped but that now 365 will offer these free bets and concessions to all punters. What ofcourse they will do is offer the concession but to a max of £1-50p.Still its worth complaining if enough did it things might change.

Just fed the duck, as recommended by Barry.
I know it's wrong to keep just one, but his mate got carried off by the fox and he does get on very well with the chickens. I guess it's company for him.
I can't see why Barry should argue against the premise / fact, that the off-course corporations have manipulated the on-course market for thirty years, and this GN is just another example of that.
btw. is there anybody left that thinks contacting the GC for help is anything but a complete waste of time and effort.
Report charwell. April 13, 2010 1:43 PM BST
Do you bookies not think Oppenheimer bring your good name into disrepute by taking advantage of less informed punters with shockingly bad odds out of eyesight of his competitors then?

eg. Offshore Account 9/2 - 8/1 in the ring and every other runner at at least 1/3 odds less than the ring?
