IF I WAS BACKING A HORSE TO PLACE AND IT WAS say 3.65 in the backing colum and in the lay colum it was 3.95 does that mean i can back with odds of up to 3.95 and have a realistic chance of getting matched

Devlin theres often a wide gap early morning be wary of putting in your price too close to that thats available as thr Trader will invariably bite and gobble it up.
Within 1/2 hour of the race the 2 prices will get much closer.

Yes - especially early on. And if its a certain group of trainers yes perhaps later on also.
