OUR VIC
David Johnson has had some great horses Our Vic must rate up with the best. Most horses would do well to win one race like a Reynoldstown Chase, a Paddy Power, a Charlie Hall, a Ryanair, a Totesport Bowl or a Peter Marsh but this twelve-year-old gelding has won all these and seven other races as well. Apparently as good as ever as he approaches his teenage years, the Grand National now apparently figures on Our Vic's radar and whereas stamina appeared to be an issue in his younger days he certainly seems to be seeing out his races much better in later life. Usually quite lightly raced each season but has already visited the racecourse five times this season so might not have many more runs between now and Aintree if he is to take his chance in the Grand National. |

Vic Venturi 25-1
OUR THOUGHTS: Similar profile to Dessie Hughes' other Grand National candidate Black Apalachi in that both horses had entered their Becher Chase winning season on a long losing streak but managed to find their form at the right time. Vic Venturi won his race prior to Aintree but before that we have to go back to October 2006 to find his last winning run. Amazingly during that barren run his handicap mark rose by eleven pounds as a result of finishing runner-up in three top-quality handicaps so it remains to be seen if there will be much improvement left to find now he has found a winning thread. He was put up a further six pounds for his win in the Becher and that was an eight runner race that was quite slowly run in the early stages so it may not have been much of a comparison as to what to expect in the National itself. Some of Vic Venturi's jumping was a little ponderous in that race and it would be doubtful he could jump so deliberately in April and be able to be competitive. War Of Attrition
OUR THOUGHTS: Surely one of the classiest horses to potentially run in the Grand National for some years. Runner up in the Supreme Novices Hurdle to future Champion Hurdler Brave Inca in 2004, he went on to win a host of races over fences but is, of course, best remembered for his victory over Grand National winner Hedgehunter in the 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Has suffered injury since then but has managed to find winning ways again after returning from a lay off. War Of Attrition has always been a super jumper and let's hope he does line up as to see him take on the Aintree fences would be something to savour. |

Irish Raptor
Irish Raptor had finished 7th, 6th, 2nd and 6th in his four previous attempts over the National fences but finally got to the line in front in the 2009 Topham to register an Aintree success at the fifth attempt. Nigel Twiston-Davies took him out of the National at quite an early stage last year but it seems his win in the Topham has persuaded the trainer to focus his horse at the National for 2010 and whilst he obviously has an excellent completion record over the National fences there must remain a nagging doubt about the horses stamina. The ten-year old gelding seems to find the better quality races a struggle at longer distances but may be able to get into a better rhythm at Aintree and could definitely lead the field for a very long way. This horse had been touted for the National earlier in his career but failed to make the weights but would now almost certainly be assured of a place and his trainer is well aware of what is required of a National winner after the successes of Earth Summit and Bindaree. |

OUR THOUGHTS:
Ended the 2008 season with three wins out of four for David Wintle but moved on to Nigel Twiston-Davies for 08/09 who amazingly managed to improve the horse a further 30lb. Hello Bud won an ordinary handicap chase on his debut for the Twiston-Davies yard off a mark of 111. After a further three wins that season culminated in a tremendous all the way victory in the Scottish National. Stamina for Aintree seems assured with victories recorded already over 31f, 32f and 33f he will surely have the most proven stamina in the race if he does make it to Aintree in 2010. He also seems versatile in terms of ground with wins coming on ground ranging from Good to Firm to Heavy. Hello Bud is a very interesting candidate for the Grand National, although it is quite a few years since a Scottish National winner was successful at Aintree with only two horses having done this double in the last twenty-five years (Little Polveir and Earth Summit). Both of these horses did not achieve the double in consecutive seasons and Hello Bud faces a massive task in trying to go on and win at Aintree in 2010. However, it would be a huge achievement if Hello Bud could continue to improve enough to be competitive in the Aintree Grand National and his progress should be monitored closely. |

Mon Mome
OUR THOUGHTS: Caused one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Grand National when proving twelve lengths too strong for 2008 winner Comply Or Die in the 2009 race at the amazing odds of 100/1. In hindsight it is incredible that a former runner-up in a Welsh National and winner of 57k handicap at Cheltenham was allowed to go off at such dismissive odds but, in truth, his form immediately before Aintree had been very disappointing. Mon Mome has been put up 13lb for his authoritative win at Aintree and BHA Handicapper Phil Smith states he expects that Ventetia Williams' horse will have to give Comply Or Die 7lb in next year's race after receiving 6lb from him in 2009 - David Pipe should like the sound of that! Mon Mome's performances this season give plenty of encouragement to connections that he will give an excellent account of himself when attempting to defend his crown. I can't see it winning again :( |

you got to be in it to win it though ;)
