OUR THOUGHTS:
Didn't look a likely Grand National candidate when well beaten in a Hunter Chase at Aintree in April 2009 but has since won a novice hurdle and a couple of competitive British handicaps. Backstage won four point to points last season but it is his 29lb rise up the handicap that has catapulted him into the higher echelons of the Grand National betting and in particular his last victory at Ffos Las where a good field were comprehensively despatched. Trainer Gordon Elliott has been talking about focusing on Aintree and the Grand National where he would now seem to be almost certain to make the weights. Stamina is still to be confirmed but the way he won at Ffos Las over three miles two furlongs, staying extreme distances would seem likely. He has wins on good and good to firm under Rules and soft and heavy in point to points so this would suggest that whatever ground he encounters at Aintree would not come as too much of a problem. Lack of experience may be the biggest factor with this horse as he currently has only had eight races over fences under Rules and connections would probably not want his handicap mark to go up too much more if they do run more over the bigger obstacles before the National weights are released.

Was a prolific scorer in the 06/07 season where he won five races, including a four-timer over fences. Ended that season by springing a surprise in the Champion Novice Chase at the Punchestown Festival. After four runs in the 09/10 season he finds himself eleven pounds less in the handicap than he was when running well in last year's Grand National and at ten-years-old it's not impossible to seeing him bettering last year's performance on such improved terms.

Matched Hedgehunter in finishing runner-up after winning the National and like that great horse just found the extra weight against him when losing out to Mon Mome in 2009 after taking the lead between the last two fences. Not impossible to believe that he could regain his title if the handicapper relented slightly and much will depend on Phil Smith's view and how the horse performs between now and the publications of the weights for 2010. Likely to have his season totally geared to Aintree once again and should definitely not be overlooked as another Aintree placing at the very least looks very possible.

Most horses would do well to win one race like a Reynoldstown Chase, a Paddy Power, a Charlie Hall, a Ryanair, a Totesport Bowl or a Peter Marsh but this twelve-year-old gelding has won all these and seven other races as well. Apparently as good as ever as he approaches his teenage years, the Grand National now apparently figures on Our Vic's radar and whereas stamina appeared to be an issue in his younger days he certainly seems to be seeing out his races much better in later life. Usually quite lightly raced each season but has already visited the racecourse six times this season so might not have many more runs between now and Aintree if he is to take his chance in the Grand National.

After that McBratney stated that the Becher Chase might be the next target but instead the son of Tiraaz waited until January for his next run, a novice hurdle at Naas. The lack of a run for nearly five months did not appear to inconvenience Ballyholland who kept on well to record the fifth win of his career when winning by just under two lengths from Mr Cracker. This latest win pushes his career strike rate up to close to 33% and he looks a horse to continue to follow but with no wins over 22 furlongs it remains questionable if he would have the stamina for a race like the Grand National. Two wins in his early career at three miles in point to points may give hope to his supporters about his underlying stamina but four defeats at distances over 22 furlongs on the racecourse must call into question his ability to stay a trip.

Confounded doubters when winning his last race at Newbury as had become known as something as a right-handed course specialist. Has been given a mark of 143 for the Grand National and his offical mark has now risen to 149 so is theoretically six pounds well in if he races at Aintree. On a hat-trick of wins after winning the London National at Sandown and the aforementioned Newbury win came in a top-quality veterans race where the likes of Trabolgan, Knowhere, Gone To Lunch and Ellerslie George were all behind. His career has been ear-marked by his enthusiastic front-running style and exuberant jumping, something that may well stand him in good stead at Aintree. The supposed preference for right-handed tracks remains a concern with eight of his eleven wins coming that way round but if that can be overcome then he looks to have an excellent chance, although has had one race over the National fences in the 2008 Topham and came down at the sixth fence

Unfortunately things went badly wrong on his chasing debut that year and it was decided to revert to hurdles as his jumping of the larger obstacles had left much to be desired in his first outing over fences at Cheltenham. This turned out to be a good decision as Ballyfitz went on to win three more hurdle races before returning to fencing including the big prize of the Pertemps Hurdle final at the Cheltenham Festival in 2008. The following season he started off with two wins in Novice Chases and it looked as if he was destined for top honours but unfortunately his jumping problems returned and three further outings produced no more wins. The 09/10 season has seen him well fancied for the Paddy Power and the Hennessy but an encouraging fourth in the former led to more jumping problems in the latter. Twiston-Davies sent him back over hurdles again for a confidence boost and this seemed to do the trick as he ran out a good winner of a decent handicap hurdle at Sandown but again jumped stickily when put back over fences in the Welsh National. Given his history of jumping errors it would take a big leap of faith to have confidence in him navigating his way round Aintree.

However, his exertions just took their toll and he weakened from the second last. He was ridden in the big race by Christian Williams who had this to say afterwards: He'll be a year older next year, and perhaps on softer ground you never know. He's only a baby and although he got a little tired over the last three he was a pleasure to ride. 'He's got a little cut on his hind leg and that may have made a slight difference, but if he improves again and comes back with a nice weight next year he could go close.'
This has to be seen as an impressive performance from a horse with such little experience and he will be at the top of many punters shortlists for 2010. Any fears that he would be aggressively campaigned in 09/10 to increase his experience appear to have been quelled with just one run prior to the weights. His supporters may be glad about this as any major rise up the handicap would push him into a weight territory for the National that may prove insurmountable. He started this season off 150 and has been given 146 in the National and you would therefore hope he will prove extremely competitive in 2010, especialy after his eyecatching victory over an inadequate trip at Newbury recently.

Silver Birch Odds and Grand National Form2007 Grand National winner who returned from nearly two years off with injury to show glimpses of his old form and, perhaps, indicated enough to his connections to suggest that he should be given another chance at the National itself in 2010. The problem is that he is now thirteen-years-old but he was still going well when coming down at Bechers on the second circuit last year and then went on to run Cross Country king Garde Champetre to two lengths at Punchestown. He obviously retains a lot of his old ability and as he has still only had nineteen races over fences so perhaps Silver Birch could bow out on a big win?

Appeared to have last year's Cheltenham William Hill Chase at his mercy when hitting the front at the 2nd last fence but an inspired ride from AP McCoy galvanised Wichita Lineman into a strong late run and Maljimar was defeated by a neck. His jockey, Daryl Jacob, came in for a lot of criticism for that ride which appeared unfair given the heroics performed by the Champion Jockey to get his mount up on the line. Nevertheless, it did call into question the stamina reserves of Nick Williams' charge and as that race was at three miles those contemplating backing him over a further 1 1/2 miles can only be optimistic that an extreme waiting ride would see him last out the Grand National trip, although has recently been placed in a 3m 7f cross-country race. This horse has looked very progressive and could well win a big race at some point but hard to see it being the Grand National.

View Profile Very young to be considered a Grand National prospect and, at the time of writing has only had six races over fences and nine races under Rules in total in his fledgling career. Tricky Trickster was owned by the Million In Mind partnership in 07/08 and the multiple owners of that club had great fun with a win in a novice handicap chase at Newbury and emphatic ten length success in the NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Nigel Twiston-Davies trained the youngster to his Festival victory but as the Million In Mind horses all go to the sales at the end of the season, this horse was bought for an owner in Paul Nicholls' yard at the Doncaster Sales. 320,000k was invested for this son of Oscar and Nicholls was reportedly very excited at the prospect of training the horse in 09/10. Started the season 22lb higher than his last victory in a handicap so Mr Nicholls might have his hands full trying to ensure his owner gets a decent run for 300k+. Obviously stamina won't be a problem with regards to the National but inexperience and youth could well be and whilst NH Chase winners should theoretically do well in the National with Butlers Cabin and Hot Weld winning other big staying races races, no NH Chase winner as gone on to win the Grand National itself in recent years. Had been backed into Grand National favourite after taking advantage of Denman's fall when winning the Aon chase but was bitterly disappointing when a fancied outsider in the Gold Cup.

Nigel Twiston-Davies trained the youngster to his Festival victory but as the Million In Mind horses all go to the sales at the end of the season, this horse was bought for an owner in Paul Nicholls' yard at the Doncaster Sales. 320,000k was invested for this son of Oscar and Nicholls was reportedly very excited at the prospect of training the horse in 09/10. Started the season 22lb higher than his last victory in a handicap so Mr Nicholls might have his hands full trying to ensure his owner gets a decent run for 300k+. Obviously stamina won't be a problem with regards to the National but inexperience and youth could well be and whilst NH Chase winners should theoretically do well in the National with Butlers Cabin and Hot Weld winning other big staying races races, no NH Chase winner as gone on to win the Grand National itself in recent years. Had been backed into Grand National favourite after taking advantage of Denman's fall when winning the Aon chase but was bitterly disappointing when a fancied outsider in the Gold Cup.

Mon Mome has been put up 7lb for his authoritative win at Aintree and Ventetia Williams' horse will have to give Comply Or Die 2lb in 2010 after receiving 6lb from him last season - David Pipe should like the sound of that! Mon Mome's performances this season,particularly when third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, give plenty of encouragement to connections that he will give an excellent account of himself when attempting to defend his crown.

A typical renewal of this world famous steeplechase by recent standards, with the top weight rated 158 for the fifth time in the last nine years, and the entire field in the handicap proper for the sixth consecutive season.
There was a false start, with the reluctant to race King Johns Castle not helping matters, and that runner disgraced himself by duly refusing to take any part when the runners were let go second time around.
There's an interesting theory regarding last year's race that the pace steadied after the leader Black Apalachi unseated his rider at the 22nd, resulting in far more horses than usual being in contention going to two out, making the bare form somewhat dubious. However, that most certainly wasn't the case this time, indeed it was quite the opposite. The pace was relentless from the off and by about the 25th fence (six out), four of the first five home had drawn clear.
DON'T PUSH IT was backed into joint-favouritism on course, halving in price having opened up at 20-1, which only serves to highlight the affection the general public have for Tony McCoy, despite him having never won the race before, considering the horse was still hovering at around the 19 mark on Betfair minutes before the off. And the quite brilliant 14-times champion jockey duly delivered, landing his first Grand National at the 15th attempt with an ultra-confident ride.
The furthest trip the winner had tried previously was 3m3f, but he was staying on well on that occasion and this marathon distance clearly suited. Pulled up over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival on his previous outing, he was tackling these unique fences for the first time, but he took to them immediately. He always looked to be travelling nicely and one got the impression McCoy was quietly confident from some way out.
The only slight moment of worry was when this 10-y-o made a minor error at the 26th, but he soon recovered his momentum and still hadn't been asked for everything when upsides Black Apalachi jumping the last.A fine leap there saw him take the lead and he briefly looked set to win in style, but one suspects he's a bit idle and his rider had to get serious with him to hold off the runner-up's persistent challenge.
Don't Push It is apparently a nervous type,who spends much of his time in a field with around half a dozen sheep, ( :0 ) and connections were quick to praise the yard's amateur rider Alan Berry for the work he has done with this son of Old Vic. There was evidence of the horse's edginess beforehand, for despite the application of earplugs on the way to the start, he had got quite warm. But he did everything that was asked of him in the race itself and has now won at this meeting for the last two years, having landed a 3m1f handicap off a 10lb lower mark last term. If the visual impression was correct, and he did have a bit more in hand that the margin suggests, it would be no surprise to see him put up a bold bid of defending his crown next year. Boylesports go 25-1.

He had also failed to complete in the 2008 running, having fallen early, but his Becher win later that year proved his liking for these fences and there never seemed to be any chance he wouldn't get round this time. He attacked the obstacles under his usual positive ride, and he stuck on remarkably well for pressure.
State Of Play, 5lb lower than when fourth in this race 12 months ago, wasn't in the group of four who got a break on the field around six out, and as such he was never in with a winning chance, but he kept on gradually. He was pulled up in the Hennessy on his only previous run since last year's race, but he goes well when fresh.
Big Fella Thanks was the subject of a late jockey change after Ruby Walsh was injured in an earlier race, with Barry Geraghty getting off Tricky Trickster to take the ride. It's easy to see why he was sent off joint-favourite, for he was racing off a mark 3lb lower than when sixth in this race as a novice last year (when just a 7-y-o), and warmed up for this with a win over 2m4f at Newbury, leaving him 5lb well in. However, despite jumping better than last year and being produced with every chance after getting in the breakaway, his stamina gave way when it was required most, and he faded badly on the run-in. Perhaps he'll see this trip out better as he gets older.
For all that Hello Bud ran creditably, this was a slightly odd performance. Ridden handily as usual by his young amateur, who matched up well against the professionals, his jumping was good and, being a dour stayer (won last year's Scottish National off 7lb lower), one would have expected him to keep going. But his final effort was a bit tame.
Snowy Morning, 2lb higher than when third in this in 2008, and 9lb lower than when beaten 30l in last year's race, never looked like winning.
Character Building, sold privately in the days leading up to the race but still with John Quinn, didn't seem to jump well enough early and that meant he was always struggling to get involved. He briefly looked a contender for fourth after the last, but ultimately didn't see his race out.
Cloudy Lane was never competitive and looks too high in the weights, while Tricky Trickster, who had Richard Johnson on board, replacing Barry Geraghty at the last minute, was never seen with a chance after being badly hampered at the 20th.
Cerium was in the process of running creditably, but surely held, when making a mess of the 26th fence.
Comply Or Die, 14lb higher than when winning this in 2008 and 1lb lower than when runner-up to Mon Mome last year, was never a factor.
Arbor Supreme didn't get high enough at 15th and unseated his rider after blundering, while Backstage :( still looked to have something to offer when hampered and unseating his rider at the 20th.
Conna Castle, racing beyond 3m for the first time, was given a bold ride and ran well for a surprisingly long time, despite being inclined to go out to his right on occasions.
There was no show from this season's Welsh National winner Dream Alliance, who presumably found the ground too quick.
Maljimar wasn't that far away when falling at the 22nd.
Last year's winner Mon Mome, 7lb higher this time, got warm beforehand and never seemed to be going all that well. He was plugging on but had a lot to do when falling at the 26th.
Early faller My Will hit the deck again when crashing through the 20th when loose, and he caused carnage in behind. Nozic ended up unseating his rider at that fence and Vic Venturi, who was badly hampered at the first and made a mistake at the third, was brought down.
The Package failed to improve the poor record of 7-y-os in this, unseating at the 19th, too early to know how he might have fared. [RW]
