May well go off on the firm side of good if there's no watering and the sun shines like today. Therefore it may pay to have atleast one fast ground horse on your side.
From what I can see there are only 2 horses in the race that have won over at least 3 miles on gd/fm or firmerin a Class 2+ race, aged 8,9,10, carrying under 11st in the National :
Backstage - won a 3m chase at Perth on gd/fm (class 2 13k)
State of Play - won a 25f race at Wetherby on gd/fm (class 1 51k 2008)
Other notable fast ground horses who fall down on either age and/or class of win are :
Ollie Magern - aged 12, won a 25f chase at Wetherby on gd/fm (class 1 51k 2007)
Hello Bud - aged 12, won a 28f chase at Wincanton on gd/fm (class 3, 8k) but also notably won the Scottish National in 2009 on good.
Personally, i've just had a little e/w punt on Backstage at 25's with Stan James 1,2,3,4,5. Cerium is my outsider bet at 66's at much smaller stakes. That'll do I think.

Aintree going THE going for the John Smith's Grand National has been described as good to soft, good in places after officials watered the famous track. So they've been watering again overnight I know it's for the safety of the horses and all that but.......actually it's not for the safety of the horses at all otherwise they'd water at every course, not race over the jumps in the summer and abandon firm ground meetings completely. It's because of the bad publicity it'd get if a horse dies, simple as.
Not saying it's particularly wrong but the trainers of firm ground horses must be a bit cheesed off with it. Not sure how how much of a difference the watering will make though ? Maybe left it too late ? |

they do abandon firm ground jump meetings and summer jump meetings take place on ground no firmer than good to firm. |
