Betfair no longer able to show races from thier tracks. Must be desperate to get more subscribers imo. At the same time the edgeboss link wiped out. Give them 6 months imo. G.O.N.E.

Yeah great attitude, i hope ATR go bust too so we can have fantastic coverage from C4 and BBC2 every day!

Yes, would be great stood around in the bookies to watch racing. No more replays.
unbelievable that some people want them to fold.
Racing Post article stated 40,000 subscribers. That don't sound too shabby to me.

It was only £10 a month when part of Setanta, and you got the equivalent of ESPN with it. You now get less for more money, I think that's what is the grating issue with many people.

RUK are overcharging. If it was half that I'd pay up but why should I pay the £10 supposedly for their website when I can get better elsewhere and don't want it. I can watch a lot of their racing on terrestrial or other sources.

RUK obviously hooked a few mugs with their "Ruby treble at Cheltenham" offer. They now have a year's subscription from each of them.
All their adverts are for bookies (ATR free because of adverts) and bookies probably not happy that folk could watch RUK on Betfair instead of having to bet with them to watch it for "free".
The bookies put the Sporting Life out of business by withdrawing their advertising and their mouthpieces like RUK and the Racing Post are well aware of how much they depend on bookies advertising to keep going.
After all if RUK didn't have all that bookie advertising revenue, they would probably need to charge about £20 per month for their service.
Oh wait . . . .

RUK reportedly say that they have more subscribers now than when they originally launched. The worldwide global recession has had no effect on them at all. As Fabricus said its only the cost of a nice bottle of wine anyway.
If £20 a month is a problem then you shouldnt be betting anyway. As for the skint merchants who have to watch on here I can hardly bring myself to denigrate them.
If you cant afford something then get a better paid job. It aint rocket science ;)

I dont think so. RUK is clearly aimed at the punter who dont need to concern himself about a p0xy score. As Muqbil sed its a quality service and you have 2 pay for it.

Clearly Setanta were not charging anything like enough per month. That's why they went bust.
Setanta were doing fine until they overpaid for sh1tty premier league football. Plenty of people on here were delighted to see them go bust, just as some will be pleased to see RUK go. They'll basically be happy when all we have to see on telly is football and the boat race.

Racing UK have clearly overvalued their product. £20 per month for half of the coverage is clearly too much for the casual racing fan. Can you imagine Sky having the cheek to charge £20 a month for their sports package and then telling you that half the week you wont be able to watch half the premiership games because they are on another channel. I think it goes to show how out of touch the racing industry and in particular RUK are.

I would imagine one of the big problems they're going to encounter is that everybody who wants to pay to watch racing has already done so. It's not like there's a wide uncaptured market of people who want to pay to watch horses race against each other.
It's hard to imagine any non-gambler suddenly gaining a huge interest in the sport. I used to watch occasionally when it was free (with something else I had, probably NASN) but £20 is ludicrous

The many posters on here who said RUK wouldn't last 6 months went it first appeared on our screens, and then went through the same sorry arguments when they went as a stand alone channel, are now left with two options. 1) Say "oops I was completely wrong there", or 2) say "I meant six months from now" every six months. Perhaps unsurprisingly most have chosen the latter. It reminds me of betting with people at school who lose and then say "double or quits" until you reach a point where they owe you several million pounds and you end up saying "tell you what, don't worry about it".

The users of RUK must fall into 2 camps, the ones who just watch the race irrespective of how far behind live it is and those that want to bet IR.
For the former there are plenty of ways and means to see these pics and the latter...good grief if ATR offered a 20 quid subs service to speed up their picks think of how many sis etc subs would stop

when Setanta first bid on Scottish football, both Celtic and Rangers voted to refuse the deal on the grounds that Setanta didn't have any money and they were only scraping by from month to month. The Old Firm were outvoted by the rest of the Scottish teams and had to accept the deal.
There were football fans up there who had paid for Setanta because Setanta had told them it was not going to be available in pubs and clubs, but once they had their residential take up, Setanta set about selling their wares to pubs and clubs. The company probably knew that they were going to lose a lot of their residential business the following year so they had to look for other avenues of income.
Setanta then targetted the much larger English market and bid money that it didn't have for EPL matches and then bid millions more for England international matches. They were probably hoping that a massive monthly uptake in subscribers in England would help finance their costs.
Unfortunately there was much less uptake than they had expected with the result that they couldn't meet their regular payments to either the Scottish or the English leagues and subsequently went bust.
The point of this novel is to show that it was the overpriced football that bust Setanta and it had nothing to do with them offering the bookie subsidised RUK for a reasonable price. (if the bookies had any sense they would realise that a free RUK would be watched by lots more people and folk who watch racing tend to bet on racing)

RUK has the finest pundits. remember all those folks could be pro puntering but they need compensating for loss of earnings. Hence the score a month. Its a no brainer 4 me.

Anyone know how the Life are able to show RUK replays for free, yet the Post charge for them?
I wasn't able to watch Aintree live yesterday as was in meetings, but when I got home I could see every minute of every race gratis, thanks to the Life.
Personally, I'm in work Mon-Fri and when I did have RUK as part of the Setanta package, I'd only watch live RUK racing at weekends, and on weekdays, the replays. For a tenner, inc ESPN and Setanta, that was good value.
£20 a month for the privilege- in my particular case- of watching the non C4 races on a Saturday, and the Sunday races (when more often than not the best racing is in Ireland, and on ATR anyway), is too much. I don't even need the replays any more, thanks to the Life site.
If they were to introduce a weekend package, tailored in my case to the jumps season, but whatever, flat or jumps or both, I'd be interested but not otherwise. A lot of people would come into my category of viewing times and levels, I think.

I think the point most people object to is the delay because when first launched RUK was supposed to be in direct competition to the SIS feed with all the premiere tracks and thats why it was £20 a month. ATR is bascally there to feed the compulsive gambler with pretty much dross racing i.e 0-65 or 0-45 on the sand and who's turn is it today. I don't think its a case of too much racing just too much crap racing to be honest.

The edgeboss link was a pirate link, so it has been nailed in the way pirate links tend to be - it'll reappear somewhere else no doubt.

I like R U K and its presenters, but not enough to justify keeping paying £240 a year for it. With Sky Digital, you get tickets for some free race days. With Virgin Media, you get nothing. Still seething at their offer to give newbies 12 months free subscription if Ruby won the Big 3 at Cheltenham, whilst giving regular subscribers zero. So the moment the last race finishes at Aintree tomorrow night, I am cancelling my subscription.

I am not paying the £20 simply because as Cymro said earlier ...... the people who work during the week do not get value for money. Many years ago a weekend package was available at a reduced. I am sure if that was to be implemented there would be 000's of additional subscibers.

i believe long term ruk are doing harm to british racing, how can people get to like racing if they cannot even watch it.i suspect that most of their viewers are involved in racing in one form or another but where do the viewrs of the future come from if new people do not come to love the game.

Indeed Mr crow. I've got a nephew who really got into racing through the old ATR. Being part of the initial package it didn't cost any extra when it came along, but for that I don't think he would ever have grown to love the sport. To this day his family don't subscribe to RUK because of the extra cost, he himself isn't in a financial position to pay for it himself as he is still at university. The access that ATR initially gave and still do within a cheap package has been fantastic for the sport. RUK is of a high quality but is for people already involved in the sport, they really do little to foster new lovers of the sport. Being a subscription channel makes sure of that.

Doesn't anyone on here remember when there were no pictures at all, apart from ITV and BBC. No pictures in the bookies either? Good punters could still make the game pay reading the Sporting Life and listening to the commentary on the blower.

They are greedy barstewards. £20 is expensive for a single sport, where they have moderate coverage of the NH racing. It's also too expensive to go racing & they wonder why so few people go.

There are many, many people less well off than ourselves that cannot afford this. Racing should be for everyone. You need to compare this with subscriptions for other sports. Sky Sports and ESPN are cheaper for instance. I would have thought that if you want to encourage people to get involved & bet on horse racing, you'd make it cheap to get as big an audience as possible.
