Moonax looks to have been the highest rate of your suggestions wiith a couple of group one wins, but achieved jack ** on over hurdles.

Wahington Irving's 5th in the derby can't be far away from the best form against some of the other suggestions.

think you could be right with Wellbeing Mikael. 117 or

There was a saint leger winner went hurdling a few years ago, won his first hurdle race then never won again, began with A, can't remember his name.
Sea Pigeon ran in the derby and became a great hurdler.
Report bazzar • April 9, 2010 9:35 AM BST
Whodareswins had already named him but I hadn't seen his post.
Report Quito • April 9, 2010 9:37 AM BST
Didn't Moonax's St Leger win count then?
Report bidders itch • April 9, 2010 9:41 AM BST

Report blackstock • April 9, 2010 9:42 AM BST

Report bazzar • April 9, 2010 10:15 AM BST
Yeah you are right Blackbarn, I backed it as well as Aldaniti, couldn't
make my mind up as to which might win so backed them both and doubled them with a non runner in the derby, which went on to win the St Leger.
Report Nomadic Way • April 9, 2010 10:17 AM BST
Cesare was only beaten a length in the 2007 Queen Elizabeth Ii Stakes (group 1)
Report driver2 • April 9, 2010 10:19 AM BST
Anselmo, 4th to Santa Claus in the 1964 Derby has to be up there. I remember its 1st hurdle race, it was 3-1 in the morning papers but drifted to 14-1 on course. I went to the local BS in Surbiton and had a small bet at 14's and went home to watch it on the telly. Johnny Haine, imo the greatest ever over hurdles, rode it and it bolted up
Report gerard • April 9, 2010 10:21 AM BST
Mountain Kingdom worth a mention.

Amidst all the confusion, didn't Lazaz try to bite Mountain Kingdom's jocket at Chester?
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • April 9, 2010 12:04 PM BST
jockey even.
Report salmon spray • April 9, 2010 12:11 PM BST
Spartan General was the sire of Spartan Missile.
His first jump in public was in the 62 Derby when there was a pile-up and he jumped over the prone future Leger winner Hethersett. He was useful but not top-class on the flat, nearly top-class over hurdles and a spectacular winner of his first chase. Didn`t really go on over fences though and was retired to stud. He was a reasonably successful NH sire but made a bigger impression with pt-to-pts. Was champion sire in that sphere about 10 years running I think.
Report Breeding Iriot • April 9, 2010 12:18 PM BST
No wonder he didn't really progress over fences.....if he still had his tackle intact!
Report salmon spray • April 9, 2010 12:21 PM BST
Obviously he had. There have been one or two entires who have done well over fences. Kadastrof relatively recently, but Fortina I think was top-class and became a successful sire.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • April 9, 2010 12:30 PM BST
Fortria, SS?
Report salmon spray • April 9, 2010 12:31 PM BST
Fortina was his sire. Fortria was a gelding.

Actually an awful lot of high quality geldings with a claim to stay have gone hurdling at some stage, with varying success. Brown Jack won The Champion Hurdle though before becoming a flat legend.

Report salmon spray • April 9, 2010 1:02 PM BST
Is that an OR or a Timeform rating. If the latter then Alderbrook and Royal Gait were higher.
