The BBC are a disgrace when it comes to sport. Taking football out of the equation the BBC divide sport into 3 categories:
1. Their favs (i.e. the ones that the senior execs like) which are given as much coverage as they can afford (usually by cutting back on other sports) - these include tennis, golf, athletics, tennis, rugby union, motor sports and more tennis.
2. One off events 'cherry picked' from sports that they have no in depth interest in - these include horse racing (all they want is the Derby, National and Royal Ascot), rugby league and one or two other sports.
3. Cheap fill in sports, these are sports (games?) where they can aquire the rights for low cost but they provide a lot of broadcasting time - these include snooker, bowls and darts.
This is why cricket coverage is such a sensitive issue for them. It used to fall into their category 3 but thanks to Sky they would have to pay 'real' money for the rights so don't bother with it but then try and argue that they really care about it - MOSEY YOU ARE A LIAR.
