It is illegal and you can be banned from every racecourse in Britain if they catch you.

Usually a 6-12 month ban.

Look at it in several ways.
Is it legal to phone a bet on course?Yes
Is it legal to bet online on course?Yes
Is it legal to lay on the phone on course?Yes
Is it legal to lay online on course?Yes
You are dealing with an exchange which covers the grey areas,as it is person to person and you are not dealing with the public.
Obviously bookmakers don't like anything that reduces their trade or cuts across their path, but thinking about it logically there appears to be no problem.

Fairyhouse. A rep from Horse Racing Ireland said I could back horses but the only people allowed to lay are bookmakers. Bookmaker still continued to argue with me. Was a bit embarrassing that he was paying fees and I was not. Backing only is fine with me though.

Look at it this way , a shopkeeper is selling cigarettes in his shop paying rates and rent .You come along and set a table in front of his shop , open your bag and start selling cigarettes .

They keep rolling out that chestnut showing complete ignorance of the law.Think how many years the exchanges have been in business and how many challenges to their rights have miserably failed, yet the bookmakers still bleat about a level playing field.Maybe one day they may realise it is here to stay.

Absolute tosh tutan,an extremely poor example as you are asking the public to buy from you as an individual who has no permission to trade ,whereas individuals are going via the exchange who is the stakeholder and arbitrator and licensed

Tutan. The questions about the legality of betting in running. Selling cigs outside a shop is in nowhere near a direct comparison.

Bookies have expenses to pay , simple . You are picking their pockets .

Tutan. So do I.I pay and entry fee and commission. A proportion of the commission is directed back into horse racing. I revert again back to the question the legality of betting inrunning? To be honest Im not worried about bookmakers expenses.

If you pay the same entry and license fee as they do , then it is fine . But your 20 euro entry fee does not equate to their 400 -1000 euro daily costs .

Tutan, just because bookmakers have expenses has nothing whatsoever to do with the matter.Think of e bay compared with a high street shop,no rent, rates, heating ,lighting, insurance, wages etc. on ebay!!!

Clutter the courts the length and breadth of the country to get a permit and then?No reason to as no exchange user is holding any public funds.

it's not illegal to use a laptop in public. it's an infringement of privacy to ask what you're doing on it. it's at peoples' discretion as to whether to turf you out of their premises. in the above example why are you even bothering to get into a discussion with an on-course bookie about something which is none of his business. my iq drops at least 10 points when logging into this forum

The sooner racing stops bowing down to the needs of the bookmakers the better. There is competition out there so they've just got to deal with it and make their product more appealing.

Irish books just want to continue their closed shop and carry on laying 33/1 all the 1000/1 shots in the uncompetitive novice hurdles and 20/1 all the no-hopers in the big Handicaps. About time someone took the ch eating b astards on!

Its true, we maon about the english bookies prices, but the irish ones are horrific. Over rounds are massive, the prices on here are so much better its no wonder they dont like it, as it makes them look like the bunch of greedy shatbags they are.

In the uk, its a lot closer, and with things like BOG etc, you are often better off with the bookies than on here!
