You sound as bitter as ever.

Sherman Tanker??!!
By:
You sure do like dancing on fresh graves
By:
don't be so predictable Info. I regarded him as an evil man. Many of the staff will have passed on but if you asked people of a certain age on the streets of Cardiff for their view most would echo my feelings.
By:
sortry Duncan. I'm damned if these people writing this guff should be unchallenged. They didn't know him.
By:
did you really need to put it on here though, you seem to have double standards, you had a dig at RIP harry carpenter thread on the boxing forum, but find the need to start a thread like this, strange imo
By:
I just hope they shut it tight.
Roffle. |
By:
ybor city, fair play to you for your honesty. there is nothing wrong with that.
By:
the honest thing would have been to try to do something about it at the time rather than write about it when he's dead, imo

WILFRED SHERMAN, one of the founding fathers of the Stable Lads' Welfare Trust, a forerunner of Racing Welfare, died at his home in Spain on Sunday at the age of 99.
The former bookmaker and pools company boss returned to Britain last year to officially open Wilfred Sherman House, Racing Welfare's latest large housing project that provides accommodation for retired stud and stable staff in Newmarket where Sherman also has a road named after him. The site sits adjacent to Jack Jarvis Close which was the first housing association scheme brought to fruition by the Stable Lads' Welfare Trust and built on land Sherman bought from Jack Jarvis's dispersal estate. Cardiff-born Sherman was a former champion amateur boxer who, through his business success, went on to own many racehorses, most notably 1968 Triumph Hurdle winner, England's Glory, and Princely Son, winner of the 1974 Haydock Park Sprint. He instigated and promoted the annual stable lads' boxing tournaments that raised thousands of pounds for charity, and his legacy to the sport also included fighting for years to include a clause in the Safety at Work Act that required all riders, working for licensed trainers, to wear an approved safety helmet. Sherman's body in being returned to Britain, but no funeral arrangements have yet been announced. ................................................................ That's the article for anyone that hasn't read it. |

I like that version much better,
RIP imo. |
By:
would it have been better if I'd waited a year and said "Remember that old geezer that supported racing charidees ?"
By:
maybe say nothing
By:
why say nothing ? And let the inaccuracies stand ? I haven't said I didn't wanna have a pint with him .I said he was evil.
By:
Nothing to be gained except you got it off your chest before he's even been put in the ground. The other bookmaker who died last week is the greatest man who ever lived apparently.
By:
We need a RIP forum.
By:
Tony Morris had a good reputation. I am one of the oldest on here. I worked for Sherman...as stated. The late John Lovell was a big mate of mine. He knew Nozzie Sherman too but never worked for him. John posted on here before his tragic death as "The Trier ". He would certainly have agreed with my views.

but it sounds as if he also did something good

I like that version much better, RIP imo. not the sour bitter one from the old git |
By:
his friends were famous jockeys . Why would a bookie have jockeys as his friends ? Take your time.
By:
Did he beat you senseless in a boxing bout ?!
By:
yeah. I was 2 years past my best.Funnily enough he was handy in the 1930s.
By:
ybor - would you give him credit for supporting the stable lads boxing tournament, and the workriders' wearing of approved safety helmets? - or do you not accept that that reporting is true?
By:
yes. It's a fair question. And then you consider the agenda. Why no knighthood ? After 40 years of trying to redress the balance ?
I didn't want to go here but once upon a time a man called Clarke was found on the main railway line between London and Cardiff. |
By:
ybor knew him.
the article was printed in the racing post and written by a journalist. |
By:
I'd say that you worded that quite failrly & are entitled to post your view. I wish more people said it as it is. Perhaps your timing is not the best.
By:
Think it is fair enough from ybor . Cant see any problem with telling the truth and giving his opinion of him .
far too much of this black armbands and RIP stuff these days |
By:
in this country it is nigh on illegal to say anything derogatory about anyone who is wealthy until they are dead. hence maxwell was a lovely man when he was alive. things have got much worse since then.
By:
I think ybor is entitled to his opinion.
He knew him. I had dealings with Wilfred and dealings with Tony Morris, Tony any day of the week. |
By:
wonder what people will say about ybor city when he goes i would say he was a jackal and hyde as most people are
By:
Dr Jackal would be proud.
By:
glad ybor brought this up. Hitler would get glowing eulogy from racing media if he had supported racing charities.
By:
i doubt you are qualified to speak for john lovell.
By:
thanks for your understanding. I simply can't let people read this stuff in the paper without telling it from another perspective. The RP writerGraham Green is a pal of mine. He wouldn't be aware of the dark side. I'll be contacting him in a day or two on this matter. When Brough says you're sainted....then that's what you are.
I could tell you about Dinny the Runner who was thrown off a bridge........... |
By:
to Sportsadvisor....maybe so. We were friends since 1964. He may not have written it on here but he knew the score.
By:
its the people you dont have to treat with respect that are the people you should treat with respect. ybor just told yee the man was horrible to his staff. he knew the people working for him needed a wage so he treated them like s@it, thats how you really know what people are like. YBOR you said you bought 2 shops off him i hope you treat your staff with respect, and no one has to write up on the forum about you when you pass on
