the RP have reported the death of Wilfred Sherman. He has been referred to in glowing terms by the rather well known people with whom he had charity dealings. He is also described as being Cardiff-born. He was a bookie with around 50 shops. My younger brother worked for him during university holidays.I worked for him after the steelworks shut down.He was far and away the worst employer I have known. I bought two of the shops when he sold the business. It would be difficult to describe on here the squalor the manageress of one of the shops was forced to live and work in. The toilet for the woman and her two kids was made available to the punters. It was outside and down about 15 steps. When a punter had a touch anywhere he had a fit." Grab the clock " was the cry and his head office manageress would jump in a taxi and put a hold on payment for 3 days.Staff had to be in aforementioned head office by 9 each morning in order to check the bets of others shops. In other words you did a day's settling before you opened a shop.Meanwhile he spent his time with his mate Danny Kaye on cruise liners. I met him at the Derby in 1995....a horse caklled Sherman was running. We happened to be standing next to each other. " My name's Sherman he said " not having seen me for 25 years. He seemed a pleasant old man at the time. I just hope they shut it tight.
don't be so predictable Info. I regarded him as an evil man. Many of the staff will have passed on but if you asked people of a certain age on the streets of Cardiff for their view most would echo my feelings.

WILFRED SHERMAN, one of the founding fathers of the Stable Lads' Welfare Trust, a forerunner of Racing Welfare, died at his home in Spain on Sunday at the age of 99.
The former bookmaker and pools company boss returned to Britain last year to officially open Wilfred Sherman House, Racing Welfare's latest large housing project that provides accommodation for retired stud and stable staff in Newmarket where Sherman also has a road named after him.
The site sits adjacent to Jack Jarvis Close which was the first housing association scheme brought to fruition by the Stable Lads' Welfare Trust and built on land Sherman bought from Jack Jarvis's dispersal estate.
Cardiff-born Sherman was a former champion amateur boxer who, through his business success, went on to own many racehorses, most notably 1968 Triumph Hurdle winner, England's Glory, and Princely Son, winner of the 1974 Haydock Park Sprint.
He instigated and promoted the annual stable lads' boxing tournaments that raised thousands of pounds for charity, and his legacy to the sport also included fighting for years to include a clause in the Safety at Work Act that required all riders, working for licensed trainers, to wear an approved safety helmet.
Sherman's body in being returned to Britain, but no funeral arrangements have yet been announced.
That's the article for anyone that hasn't read it.

Nothing to be gained except you got it off your chest before he's even been put in the ground. The other bookmaker who died last week is the greatest man who ever lived apparently.

Tony Morris had a good reputation. I am one of the oldest on here. I worked for Sherman...as stated. The late John Lovell was a big mate of mine. He knew Nozzie Sherman too but never worked for him. John posted on here before his tragic death as "The Trier ". He would certainly have agreed with my views.

ybor - would you give him credit for supporting the stable lads boxing tournament, and the workriders' wearing of approved safety helmets? - or do you not accept that that reporting is true?

yes. It's a fair question. And then you consider the agenda. Why no knighthood ? After 40 years of trying to redress the balance ? I didn't want to go here but once upon a time a man called Clarke was found on the main railway line between London and Cardiff.

in this country it is nigh on illegal to say anything derogatory about anyone who is wealthy until they are dead. hence maxwell was a lovely man when he was alive. things have got much worse since then.

thanks for your understanding. I simply can't let people read this stuff in the paper without telling it from another perspective. The RP writerGraham Green is a pal of mine. He wouldn't be aware of the dark side. I'll be contacting him in a day or two on this matter. When Brough says you're sainted....then that's what you are. I could tell you about Dinny the Runner who was thrown off a bridge...........
