I had a decent look at the track bookies when holidaying in London and I could safely say that they would rarely lose.
You can't lose if you bet peanuts.
Most I saw wouldn't cut the mustard in Australia. They'd be laughed off the track.

late mail

I went racing in Aussie in 2002 when there for the ashes. I went to the Adelaide track where the taxi driver told us that there would be about 2,000 punters on the course. We also talked about racehorse ownership as he had owned a leg in the past and it seemed the costs were about a tenth of that in the UK.

Once in the course it was possible to count the number of punters and if you excluded the Brits - they were easy to spot as they all had shorts on and were congregated around the bar. I reckon, including Brits, there was about 200.

One bookie was pricing up the Adelaide test and had Aussie 2/5 - my mate and I couldn't believe it as they were more like 1/4 in the UK after slaughtering us in Brisbane. We decided to have 100 Aussie dollars each on it (at the time it was 2.65 to the pound) and he wouldn't take it: wouldn't even give us 1/3.
