Second of the big 2m 4f handicap chases run at HQ,this time on the new course.
Repeatedly referred to as much more testing than than the old course,over these shorter distances I,m yet to be convinced.
Just the 12 entries at 5 day stage,plenty with lots of form around here,and a few dark ones.
Martator .... 8 yr old Martaline gelding,from the same yard as last years winner.
Big improver in 2024,going from 118-151,clocking up a sequence of victories mainly on decent ground.
4 of those 5 wins were right handed,not surprisingly his record so far suggests thats his preference.
However,he,s not had that many chances left handed on a galloping track,back down to a more realistic 141.
Only chase start here was last years grand annual,never nearer 10th on the old course,not devoid of promise.
Ground wise he looks versatile,anything with genuine soft in the description should be fine.
Well down the pecking order in the ante-post market,he,s an interesting contender this far out.
Both of the Irish horses will need considering if taking up the entry,Josephs is an intriguing entry for one so inexperienced.
Open looking,just as it should be,any other clues always welcomed.

Slightly different summary to what I've read.
Martator ... 9th 0f ten,drifted like an Indian starter day of race,covered most of Gloucester down the back. Pace of race and mark well within his wheelhouse,never tried an inch. Hoe Joly Smoke ... See Martator Il Ridoto ... See Hoe Joly Smoke Imperial Saint ... See all of above Vincenzo ... Ran right up to his mark,probably get a few extra lbs for that. Penalising beaten horses far to prevalent,all his best form on ground with genuine cut. Trainer has the COC to thank,gd/gd fm would be much nearer the mark,should get his ground sooner or later. Es Perfecto ... Only taken trainer 4 seasons to realise he,s better right handed. Not devoid of promise rounding home turn,soft ground and anything around 125 probably see him more competitive. Colonel Harry / Ga Law .... Best result of the race. The excuse re ground for Ga Law,just go through his form,laughable. Rule needs changing asap .... The 6lb rise would have taken his stablemate to 12-00st. Kim Roque .... Hard one to work out,lost his place at a vital stage as the pace lifted,by design or otherwise. Remains a dark one on minimal evidence,like to see him on proper soft,likeable type. Jagwar .... Never liked him,even when the cat was out the bag. On that ground he would be lapped in the Ryanair/Gold Cup. Something like the welsh national long term might see him prosper,he looks like a stayer to me. Glengouly .... 7 lb wrong,never headed,makes a mockery of handicapping in many ways. Not often you see a Mullins reject and wonder just what was his ideal trip/ground etc Ridden by one of the channel 4 team midweek in the build up,no idea if he can back that form up going forwards. Delighted to see a small trainer take the pot,if she was the trainer. |

Intrigue continues,with the December Gold Cup throwing up two national runners.
Jagwar ... Right up there near the head of the market,on the back of his Ultima run.Thought originally he wanted plenty of cut,a closer look suggests the opposite,form figures with "good"in the going description read 2,1,1,3,2. He's a big raw unit,clumsy at times,but also scopey when he meets a fence right.He might be better with genuine cut in the ground,whichever way,he,s been on a steep upward curve these past couple seasons.Like to see him put in a clean round,does 152 reflect his true ability?,time will tell.More than happy to say I got him completely wrong,he,s not my kind of price,but I can see the attraction,could go really well. Imperial Saint ... Sneaks in as a reserve off 144,carrying just 10-02 lb.Lost all chance in the Ultima when virtually brought to a standstill down the back,he stuck on when the race was over,plenty would have pulled up,was there reasoning behind that.Impressive record over the mildmay course,at much shorter distances,his form figures read 1,1,1,2,5.Again going back through his form,I missed the bigger picture,cheltenham was not for him,he excels on flat left handed tracks historically.Sire has produced plenty of high class animals,with plenty of stamina in there.Ground wise looks pretty versatile,some rain might help his cause.Getting into a rhythm and a clear sight of the fences will be key early doors,he can race prominent given his head.Stamina will have to be taken on trust,same with plenty of these at racing pace.Not the typical National horse for many,I get that,hard to make a case on the numbers,just that sixth sense that he could out-run his odds. Clean round for both,safe return for all of them,need a little lady if your playing. |
