Roger Varian has received a huge boost for the 2025 Flat season as Godolphin have added him to their illustrious roster of trainers for the first time.

It is around a decade since Sheikh Mohammed’s operation added to their list of British-based trainers, all of whom are located in Newmarket.

Charlie Appleby, Saeed bin Suroor, John and Thady Gosden and Simon and Ed Crisford currently train for Godolphin and senior management at the racing powerhouse have confirmed to the Racing Post that Varian will receive four juveniles to train at his Carlburg Stables on Newmarket’s Bury Road.

The support is a timely boost for Varian who lost two principal owners this year, most recently when splitting with long-time backer Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum in September after nine years.

That followed the news in May that Varian and Amo Racing had gone their separate ways after an injury to then stable star King Of Steel.

Godolphin have previously had two horses run in their famous royal blue silks for Varian. They bought into Belardo, along with Prince Faisal, after a juvenile campaign in which he won three times, including the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

His first run in Godolphin's silks came when down the field in the 2015 Greenham Stakes, while he secured Group 1 glory when landing the 2016 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

During that season, Godolphin moved Barchan from Appleby to Varian to act as a pacemaker for Belardo in the bet365 Mile, Lockinge and Queen Anne. Barchan's final run for Varian was in the 2016 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, when he acted as a pacemaker for the Richard Fahey-trained, and Godolphin-owned, Ribchester.

Varian is currently heading to Japan to prepare his three-time Group 1 winner Charyn for a crack at the prestigious Mile Championship at Kyoto next Sunday.

Only last month at Ascot, Varian’s new backers Godolphin were crowned champion owners in Britain for the 17th time. They also have horses in training in France, Japan, the US, Australia and Dubai.

Reflecting on 2024, Godolphin managing director Hugh Anderson said: “The year ended very, very well for Godolphin. We weren’t sure what the year was going to hold at the outset. Notable Speech was a fantastic surprise winning the 2,000 Guineas and then going onto a superb win in the Sussex Stakes."

He said of the younger team: “I think the way we finished with the two-year-olds, Shadow Of Light in particular and the filly Desert Flower could not have been any better.“

He added: “Then you add in Rebel’s Romance, the classic Godolphin globetrotter, winning at the Breeders’ Cup was just brilliant. He’s previously shown that he’s not just an international horse when finishing an excellent third in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. I was also delighted that Saeed bin Suroor had a winner at Royal Ascot with Wild Tiger.”

Looking ahead he added: “The plan as far as I know it is that both Notable Speech and Rebel’s Romance stay in training for 2025 and we are looking forward to another good season with them both.”
