I remember winning when my big sister decided to have a bet on her 18th birthday and we won on Roberto. I was a Lester fan thereafter.
I admired Steve Cauthen, Willie Carson and Pat Eddery. Of course Franky Dettori is a fantastic rider and when he is “in the mood” he is the nearest thing to Lester.

People will now perhaps not realise, as time fades memory, just what a dominant force Lester was. Everyone, simply everyone knew his name. He was more famous than Franky is now, and yet has was a quiet man with a speech impediment.
The reason Lester was so well known was not because of flying dismounts or even his personality. It was because he was simply the greatest flat race rider ever seen and he will always be the greatest to me.

On of my first times at the races was at York on Yorkshire Cup day. Lester was riding Bright Finish for Jeremy Tree.

I remember vividly Bright Finish drifted from 7/4, and we backed him at 3/1 before he went out to 7/2.. He must have needed the run and had a stern opponent in Bruce Hobbs’ Grey Baron.

Lester went to the front about 3 out, after which Geey Baron looked up on the outside going well. Under serious pressure Lester got Bright Finish home in a photo finish and it is fair to say nobody else would have won that day. I remember trying to back Lester in the photo but the on course bookies were having none of it. “Piggott in a phot finish at York….you must be joking” was the general reply.

There were so many amazing performances, this is one I remember very fondly:
