I think that the problem is that there far too many grade one chases which makes for far too many uncompetitive chases.
Imagine if Arkle had the opportunities they have now, he would never had been out of a canter. Mind you that was true anyway when he was conceding 35 lbs but that’s not the point.
Champ has been starved of opportunities said Henderson. Well he had the big chase at Doncaster, but the poor lamb would have had to concede some weight! What Henderson wants is a nice penalty kick.
Jump racing has the potential to be just a gigantic sport, but people will get sick of watching 4/1 on shots cantering round and commentators swooning when a horse that should be giving 2 stone away wins impressively at level weights. The hapless idiots in charge of the sport will do nothing to address this problem(1.01).

Is the sort of sport we used to get and should be getting now. The huge increase in the number of level weights non- handicap races has achieved a few things. 1. It’s made it better for the big boys who mop up all the prize money 2. It denies opportunities for smaller stables and owners without the resources to pay zillions 3. It makes far too many valuable races totally boring and uncompetitive 4.:it detracts from the sport and makes it less interesting popular and less of a betting medium thereby reducing the value of the sport and the level of prize money in the end. It’s time for action but the imbeciles in charge will do nothing. |

We could follow Ireland and only have one meeting per day with half of the Group 1 races on one weekend. It is not the programme that is the issue it is the UK trainers. With the Irish absent, there has never been a better chance to have a go at a Grade 1 or 2 race with a decent handicapper. Kalashnikov third favourite for the Denman says it all really. He should be 33/1 for the race if a couple of Mullins and Elliott chasers were in. It looks likely to be heavy so not many will run on Saturday.

It is a pity that we dont get so many G1 horses running in handicaps anymore.
Then again, Between capt christy and best mate there wasnt a repeat winner of a cheltenham gold cup. Which suggests to me that top weight on bad ground in handicaps as a cheltenham prep may not have been ideal, back in the day. |

Anyone think this could be partly down to less competition, less deaths.

I just think top class horses can now have one or two competitive races per season. It’s too easy. Too much prize money is mopped up by horses running against horses 2 stones inferior but off level weights.
Denman won 2 Hennessy but his example has not been followed since sadly. |

And yes, less competition would mean fewer deaths. So let’s not have competitions, just walk overs. Not much entertainment in that. Rather more watching Dezzy winning the Irish Grand National surely?

with the big drop in prize money, horses need to win 3 decent races to pay their way. There is no way that a potential Grade 1 winner can be stopped from running in a maiden and a novice at least so those would be exercise canters. But there are only 5 or 6 of those horses each season.
