japan heads the market around 1/2 and won well at royal ascot but at those odds he is not for me . the one who i will be backing is slalom who was pitched straight into a group 3 on his debut which he won well . then ran in the french derby but blew the start and finished down the field, was quite well fancied for that and he is much better than that ,can he beat the fav ? well the epsom derby form has taken plenty of hits and slalom has plenty of room for improvement and looks the value to me around 8/1

had my biggest ever bet on japan for epsom ante post and another half a furlong he may well have got up anyway ,but price is everything in my book and slalom is a bit of an unknown quantity . also stuck a few sheckles on him in the ark around 85 for the arc just in case he hacks up here .

I still think Japan's Ascot win was very moderate and not worth the reaction it got, but what is there here to oppose him with? Just looks like more well bred handicappers from the French. Hopefully something can improve and we get a decent 3yo colt, whether it's Japan or something else.

Japan won cosily (only hand and heels), but no where as impressive as in the King Edward just 3 weeks ago.
I'd not say he was workmanlike either even though he looked as if he was coming back to Slalom (2nd) who was slowly away (again), and some 12l behind the pacesetter Western Australia; Japan was lying handily 4th on the outside; Slalom (next to the rails) found a bit of traffic problem 2f out when Japan took it up, and went 3l clear of the field. I think Japan idle having been infront 2f out. He'll be given a break, and a prep race prior to the Arc eg Prix Niel or the Irish Champion Stakes, according to AOB, But, significantly no mention of the St Leger which is run on the same day as the last mentioned race. |

Charlton, the RP report reads almost like an advert for Coolmore. As for O'Brien pitting him in an all age 10f Gp1 like the Irish Champion, I'll believe it when I see it. Why run the risk of bursting the bubble when these French group races are full of donkeys this season.
