There were 2 races which warrant investigation this week
9.00 Chelmsford Feb 2, In the Spotlight , odds on fav , very slow out of the stalls after marked drift in the market
In The Spotlight was 2lb well in under her penalty for her easy win at Kempton over 6f five days earlier, but she drifted in the betting beforehand and, after missing the break and then racing keenly in rear, struggled to land a blow. Louis Steward reported that the filly ran flat.
What was odd here was that there appeared to be nothing to account for the poor start as the horse didn't rear, there was no hood, the jockey appeared to have a tight rein on the horse yet it lost 3-4 lengths sufficient to seriously damage its chance.It was beaten by just over 3L at the line.
In the normal course of events, this might not seem to be the worst case ever of a surprising poor start but given the market movement beforehand and the lack of a clear observable reason for it, it leaves a bad taste. n a field of just 5 runners over 7f it surely was not a case of wanting to offset a difficult draw.
Normally, I would have filed this in the "unfortunate" tray, but this was the second identical case this week. The earlier example was that of Absolute Blast in the 4.50 at polvs on Jan 31.

Absolute Blast almost refused to race and in normal circumstances that would have been that, but the early gallop was very sedate and she was able to make up the lost ground fairly quickly and join the back of the field. She still faced an uphill task but she does possess a good turn of foot and, in a race that developed into a dash, she wasn´t beaten far. It goes without saying that had she broken on terms she would have probably won.
This horse was also a marked drifter just before the off but still went off odds on.Beaten 1/2 L.
THe replay shows that there were good reasons . The hood looked to be off late and the horse did rear, the net result being that it was left 6-7 lengths.
Now it may be something or nothing, an unfortunate coincidence. Different trainer, different jockey. However, the best way to lose a race is at the start and to my mind an explanation is required. I would also ask that BF look into other examples of odds on favs being left at the start to see if there is a pattern.
If any other examples could be suggested that would be helpful.
