Lately in my local betting shop the staff have taken
to throwing the betting receipt face up on the counter
when returning it to me. I Have taken exception to
this and told the cashier who told me that she had never
herd anything so ridiculous. IN 40 or so years of betting
I thought it was basically an unwritten law to have the slip returned
face down.
any thoughts anybody?

Some staff will do this deliberately if they perceive the customer in question to be a time-waster or nuisance who keeps disturbing their book/magazine/episode of Judge Rinder....if they think the customer will get so wound up by this they might stop coming in the shop, they'll do it all the more...but I agree you should receive your slip face-down in case you don't wish for every Herbert in the shop to know what you've backed

You'd give them a pass if they were seriously busy, but otherwise, it is a classless thing to do.
I remember after a few pints one night, I was discussing a beaten horse with an old acquaintance, that to my mind should've won. This knob head, causal, Saturday punting mug overheard and asked me how much I had lost? I asked him what the stake I had on had to do with the ride the horse had gotten. Hate bad gambling etiquette. |

I like my €50 notes returned in a large crisp wad.
No preference for betting slip up, down, or on its edge. It is not covered by the officials secrets act. |

I would agree with you on this. I used to work in a bookies (around 1999-2003), some things we made sure were maintained. 1 Betting receipt was returned face down. The selection was not really the concern, more the amount being wagered, only the customer who placed the bet should know that, not everyone else in the shop or punters next to them (if they were being really nosey, they could probably work out based on the money changing hands) 2 If someone won a large(ish) amount in comparison to their stake and they came to collect. We would never mention the amount they were collecting, always wrote it down for them to see (more to confirm they came to the same amount and to avoid anyone nearby hearing how much they were picking up) 3 If there were large amounts being won and had to be given tot he customer, it was done discretely (folded over and handed to them so no one could work out how much was being handed over), or for slightly larger amounts, they were put into an envelop and given over. In some cases the manager would walk into the shop and take the customer to one side and hand over the envelop. Mostly done for security, someone carrying a large amount would be an easy target for a mugging or such if others found out somehow (overheard or saw large sums change hands). 4 The one I used to love was the free tea and biscuits, usually made sure the regulars were looked after. Used to have a quite a few of the older generation that used to come in on a regular basis, the spouse had usually passed on and they had no one else, therefore the used to come in for the company and to have a chat. Didn't gamble much, but would have small bets. Not sure this happens anymore. |
