Fighting Temeraire- / Dean Ivory

This horse is one I’m really interested in for the future. He is top-weight in the last race at Haydock tomorrow and has won with give in the ground but drawn on the outside over 7f, with a left hand bend of 180 degrees shortly after the start, he is for sure at a big disadvantage. Now rated at 85 after his promising recent run (ran on well late on after a couple of flicks), he will be much better on decent ground and he'll definitely get further, so I am not expecting him to necessarily win this Saturday.

This son of Invincible Spirit has Group 2 Blandford Stakes winner Eleanora Duse and Listed winner Scottish Stage (Dam own sister to, second in Irish Oaks and Ribblesdale) on his dam side, and is from family of Sun Princess.

A classy looking colt, he was quite expensive (140,000gns TATBRE 2yo) for this astute trainer by all accounts but the quality of horses in his yard is going upwards.

Slowly away on his debut, he shaped with a lot of promise, and he still looked green in front when he won his maiden with a bit in hand at Windsor on his third start as a juvenile after being bumped at half-way. He’s obviously highly rated as he was due to run in the listed Doncaster Stakes until he was pulled out on account of the ground being too soft, and was entered in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at one stage.

The colt is named after J. M. W. Turner’s iconic painting, the Fighting Temeraire; which depicts the last voyage and ignominious end of HMS Temeraire at breaker's yard at Rotherhithe. The once-glorious 98-gun warship has legendary place in British naval history as it was manoeuvred to draw fire away from the Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, while Nelson lay dying. The painting also appears in the Bond film Skyfall when Bond meets Q at the National Gallery in London. The depiction of an old war hero romanticises the passing of an age, that glorious age of sail, and it's transformation into the more mundane age of steam and steel machine-driven power. The symbolism relates to Bond’s repressed /emotions fears of being unneeded and left to rot.

Dean Ivory had his best ever season in terms of total prize money last year and has a good strike rate with 3yo handicappers (29-163, 18%).  Fighting Temeraire is far from the finished article (progressed with every run so far) and is likely to become a stable star and a 'man-of-war' for the stable in much bigger handicaps in the days ahead.

Fighting Temeraire is set to join Lancelot Du Lac (same owners, entered in the King's Stand but more likely according to Dean Ivory going for the Wokingham, ran in both races last year) at Royal Ascot in the Britannia Handicap after finishing second at Haydock last Saturday.

"We want to run him in the Britannia and he should get in it," said the Radlett handler. He was unlucky on Saturday, from his draw Robert (Winston) had to take a pull and then he was far too keen. When he got on an even keel, he flew home. He's gone up 4lb and we'll sit tight now (was entered at Doncaster on Saturday over a mile) and hope it's enough to get in. I'd love to take the winner (Out And About) on again, but they think he's a Group horse."

Seven horses got in last year with ratings in the late 80’s, so with his adjusted rating now 89, he should have no problem getting in at the bottom of the handicap, moreover, the previous year’s winner Born in Bombay (renamed Born in China!) was rated 87 and there were another six runners rated 85+ that year.
