I do love this race... as you start thinking about the National this time of the year.  Interesting race with the 1st and 2nd turning up from the Welsh National... Benvolio on 10-11 and Emporers Choice on 10-5, but think the weights will go up and they will take out the top weights (as I cant see Unioniste, First Lieutenant or Harry Topper turning up).  Of the two I fancy BENVOLIO thought this horse has a lot of potential and was unlucky not to win the Welsh National - bought by new connections who owned Part Politics (I think there was article in the RP about him - and they said he WOULD run). Venetia Williams won the race last year with Rigadin De Beauchene... and has to be respected with a few runners listed.

But for me, fingers crossed BENBENS turns up... indifferent form but did show his potential last time out...  think there is more to come from this horse 14/1 is right.

Declarations this morning, like to go in before then just incase they take a lot of horses out...

at this stage its the two Bens for me.

Good Luck.

Yes its a different place now the drop fences were done away with about 10 years ago Gordon Richards always had the type of horse to suit haydock twin oaks and carrick hill lad from the same era also rinus who finished third in mr frisks national Peter Beaumont also had the type of horse to run well in those days young Kenny and bobby grant to name but two the dickinsons also had plenty that suited haydock I will be there on Saturday and its still a great place to visit as for this years race I have it between benvolio and broadway buffalo

Worth noting that the Grand National weights are usually announced before this Trial. This year they are not.

Evening all, not really a race I can see an angle in but I couldnt help but feel that the 33/1 about Alpha Victor is way too big so had a play at the weekend. Still 25/1 but doubts around whether he will run here or the Eider though....fingers crossed as per his usual season he needs a run or two to reach his peak then usually delivers some decent form. Big race over hurdles last time out too so looks like he's reaching form for his next target

I think that P Jay's point about the GN weights may have a huge impact on this race. The horses at the bottom need a win to get into the GN. Those just above them need a decent run to stay in. Those at the top can afford a quiet run and may benefit by their ratings dropping a couple of pounds.

Just on this, I know they are being announced next week but I'm now not sure if they have already been decided upon or not. Contacted the BHA on it but no reply as of yet.

McCoy booked for Monbeg Dude.

PJay

Conditions state that weights will be set "taking account of races run up to and including February 15"

The clock says Broadway Buffalo though one has to take his application to the task on trust.
Report IrisDeBalme February 13, 2015 10:05 PM GMT
Broadway Buffalo must be pricewised as fav  - cant have him though as this tends to be a test of stamina ... theyre expecting improvement being raised in distance... but I tend to think this race goes to horses proved 3m 2f and beyond... also has quite a few runs...
Report IrisDeBalme February 13, 2015 10:13 PM GMT
Also I have noted the fact that las two big Saturday handicaps have been won by INVITA LAKE 20/1 and VIOLET DANCER...20/1 - stats wise both races suggested to look for a horse further down the handicap... near the bottom...

I ignored this stat and left rueing - but notice Grand National Trial has same profile in terms of stats...

LOCH BA (3rd in the race last year) and HARRY THE VIKING come to mind

Erm I wonder third week in the row? might go in small stakes on these two...

Definately happy with the two BENS!
