Hope Los Amigos is entered in final decs - av played at 9s, can only see that price going one way!
Form of his beginners Chase has worked out well - Grand Jesture who was 2nd boosted his form nicely yesterday winning easily from the 123 rated hit the Headlines Ballyburke in 3rd hosed up off 118 nto Jupitor in 4th - was 2nd nto off 116 and won at limk over xmas And the form of his 2nd on handicap debut is even better than it looks as he was the only one to get close to the winner who stole it from the front, did well to get within 3l and was miles clear of the 3rd who won easily nto Los Amigos was den put back over hurdles to mind his mark for a big one i assume and won that Novice hurdle too and the 2nd and 3rd av won since too Could b nicely treated off 126 if this is the plan as you'd hope it would be |

I've a feeling based on his last 2 runs that Balnaslow was kept racing into winter with this race in mind. Tempted to take a little of 12/1 now prior to final decs. |

The Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase is one of the highlights on the Irish National Hunt calendar each year and takes place at Gowran Park on Thursday 23rd January. The race can often throw up clues for the Irish and Aintree Grand Nationals later in the season with Hedgehunter and Numbersixvalverde featuring amongst the last 10 winners of the race. The last 7 winners had contested the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown, Tim Duggan Memorial at Limerick or Welsh National at Chepstow over Christmas.

the Tony Martin pair look quite interesting to me. Both horses in seasonal form and could be well handicapped. But could be out of the weights if top two run, and they're entered for the 2m5f race on Saturday too. Living Next Door would be the one for me if running. I suspect he will.

Not as close to Irish Form as many but what's the deal with Lookoutnow?
Progressive over fences last season, he impressed when 5th (beaten only 3 lengths though) at Clonmel in November over hurdles, on its first stab at 3 miles. That must have been a sighter to see if it got the trip, because it was back to 2m 3f yds at Limerick last time out just after Christmas, back over fences, which looks like it was a schooling exercise, over an inadequate trip, to get him used to the bigger obstacles again. Twice a course winner on heavy ground, is unexposed at this trip, a front-runner set to carry only 10-03. Looks a masterpiece of handicapping by his trainer but interested to see what the Irish on here reckon? |

Dual course winner LOOKOUTNOW appears to have quite a bit in his favour and is worth an interest in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran Park this week. Eoin Doyle's nine-year-old has gained both those victories on heavy ground over 2m4f and with conditions likely to be testing once again, he promises to deliver even more stepped up to three miles. By Beneficial out of a Roselier mare, there's no shortage of stamina in his pedigree and he's a half-brother to Baile Anrai, who was a dual winner over staying trips during his novice chase days when trained by Ian Williams. Lookoutnow also beat last month's Paddy Power Chase winner Rockyaboya in a 2m6f handicap hurdle on bad ground two seasons ago, so it will be disappointing if he doesn't improve for this stiffer test over fences. Doyle has protected the gelding's mark this season with two outings over hurdles followed by a run in a 2m3f handicap chase at Limerick over Christmas. It wasn't a bad effort in the circumstances to finish sixth to impressive winner Make A Track and he's set to meet that rival on 9lb better terms, with the longer trip a major plus back at his favourite venue. Willie Mullins is mob-handed at this stage, with On His Own and Vesper Bell disputing favouritism in most lists, along with the Jim Dreaper-trained Los Amigos. On His Own hacked up in this race two years ago off a 17lb lower mark and has the class to go in again if back to his best. He proved a disappointing favourite in the Becher Chase last time but had fallen on both previous runs over the National fences so that may not be the best course on which to judge his wellbeing. Vesper Bell was a smart novice last season and although he failed to come up to expectations in the four-miler at Cheltenham, he redeemed his reputation somewhat with a gallant second to Goonyella back on testing ground at the Punchestown festival. Things have not gone smoothly since however - he fell at the first in the Becher and unseated in the Classic Chase at Warwick before the race really got going. Los Amigos, much lower in the weights, arrives with a very different profile and could be well handicapped after just two chase runs, winning at Fairyhouse on his seasonal debut and finishing second in a Punchestown handicap in which the winner was allowed too much rope in front. Given his relative lack of experience though, a top price of 9-1 is fairly easy to resist in a race where there are plenty of hardy warriors likely to test his jumping prowess. It is a tough race. I was looking at Sole Witness last night too. He was 4th last year, admittedly beaten 16 lengths, but is 6lb lower now. 40/1 looks a reasonable price to me. He only ran 11 days ago though so waiting to see if he is a definite runner.

Balnaslow looks like he’s been aimed at this race in how he’s been campaigned since his Beginners Chase win over 22f. Davy Russell had said he’d be finishing up now before the winter after that race. So there must have been a decision to keep him racing and the drop back in trip to 2m and 2m3f is sure to be to protect a handicap mark He’s got staying pedigree on both Sire and Dam side. He would prefer better ground as he’s by Presenting but his half brother on his Dam side No Deal just won a 3m Hurdle on Heavy ground earlier this month. Balnaslow himself ran a fine race behind The Paparrazi Kid and Felix yonger on soft ground at Christmas so he handles the ground it seems, the weather forecast is for dry Wednesday and Thursday so the going should remain soft and not worsen. But he’s a sound jumper and being a Novice in this race wouldn’t overly concern me. He looks as if he’s well treated off 133 on his form to date and will improve significantly for a step up to 3m1f. Cooper the retained Jockey rides.
1.5pts 11/1 Hunting Party is an interesting one as he was only beaten a 1l by Balnaslow in October. He has since won a Beginners Chase at this course and was sent off 14/1 for the Paddy Power Chase where he fell at the first. He’ll get in here at the bottom of the weights and has a chance. As does Lookoutnow who has been running well. But in an open enough race where I give 6 horses a decent chance. 0.5pts 16/1 |

I haven't got a clue who'll win but I will be backing Cootamundra as a back to lay as he'll deffo trade shorter late into the race IMO,he provides this option for the punter in most of his races as he's such a strong traveller for a very long way into his races, he isn't the greatest under pressure late on so it's a balancing act at when to get out, to this end his last finishing effort was very surprising.

I backed him last time Duffy. Thought 10lb rise was ok given he had such a low mark to begin with. 16/1 underestimates him.

now 38.0 on here thinking the same way as sint and duffy but the massive drift is a concern.
However at such huge price must be a great back to lay in running option if hes still got 4 legs at the start? |

huge price Geoff but I would guess that is more to do with the reputation/win ration of the horse.

Obviously the bigger the price the better, but all the more when you suspect it won't actually win but you get a lot more room to make a better profit off the trade...he's an exciting horse to be on in the run though isn't he.....probably be push push whip whip all the way today now

managed to get some 42.0 40.0 and 38.0 so whilst expecting an exiting run should at least get a nice freebie in run.good luck

made a few errors but a nice trade even made a few quid as barring accidents was allways going to trade significantly shorter

I only made a tiny profit in all honesty but I just love the horse because whether you win or lose you always have a lot of fun watching his races...lovely old horse.

Duffy, I think it is just a case of him running over his correct trip these days. He has had 3 lifetime wins from 35 odd starts and they have all been over 3 miles. Last season he was running in a lot of graded/conditions races over 16 & 20f. |
