2yos 2013

I have put together a lists of juveniles who I believe should prove up to making an impact in their first season, hopefully at a decent level, and I have tried to mix it up in terms of early/middle/late season prospects, though I obviously only have their paper credentials to go on at this stage.

1. Abbey Village (18/3 ch c Aqlaam – Balladonia)
Trainer: Richard Fahey Owner: David Armstrong

(£80,000) Half brother to yard’s very smart 6f-1m 2yo winner (including the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere) Wootton Bassett, prolific 5f-1m winner Mister Hardy, multiple 6f winner Mister Laurel, fairly useful 6-7f 2yo winner Zaal, 6f 3yo winner Pretty Primo and 7f 2yo winner Related, out of a 1m 1f 3yo winner. Stable has saddled three siblings to victory on debut, notably subsequent Group 1 winner Wootton Bassett; should possess the speed for 6f.

2. Affinisea (22/3 b c Sea The Stars – Affianced)
Trainer: John Oxx Owner: Christopher Tsui

(€850,000) Half brother to Irish Derby/Coronation Cup winner Soldier Of Fortune, smart 7-10f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) Heliostatic, smart dual 10f winner (including at Listed level) Carraiglawn and 10f 3yo debut winner Singe The Turf, out of a very useful 7-10f winner (including at Listed level) who was a full sister to 1m 2yo Group 1 Gran Criterium winner/Irish Derby and Eclipse runner-up Sholokhov. Commanded almost 1m euros at auction and boasts an excellent pedigree, albeit one that suggests he won’t be seen until the latter stages of the season; will want 1m right away.

3. Airfield (31/1 b f Dansili – Emplane)
Trainer: Sir Henry Cecil Owner: Khalid Abdulla

Full sister to high-class 8-10f winner (including the Group 3 Musidora Stakes) Aviate, Group 1-placed dual 7f 2yo winner (including at Group 3 level) Early March and very useful but ill-fated dual 7f 2yo winner Wingwalker and a half sister to two other winners, out of a lightly-raced 1m winner out of Cheshire Oaks winner Peplum. This filly is a full sister to a pair of 7f 2yo debut winners for this stable, so there must be a good chance this daughter of Dansili will prove competitive in her first season; goes without saying that seven furlongs will be her preferred distance this term.

4. Almuhalab (15/2 b/br c Dansili – Ghanaati)
Trainer: Charlie Hills Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

First foal of connections’ 1000 Guineas/Coronation Stakes winner, herself a half sister to smart 8-12f winner (including at Group 3 level)/Champion Stakes runner-up Mawatheeq and smart 8-9f winner (including at Listed level)/Oaks third Rumoush, family of Nashwan, Nayef and Unfuwain. Exciting prospect for the season ahead, being the first foal of connection’s 1000 Guineas heroine Ghanaati; will likely find 7f his optimum distance this term.

5. Black Rodded (19/3 ch f Bahamian Bounty – Palace Affair)
Trainer: Hughie Morrison Owner: Michael Kerr-Dineen

(55,000gns) Full sister to smart dual 6f 2yo winner (including at Listed level) Queen’s Grace and a half sister to prolific 7f-1m winner April Fool and 5f 2yo AW winner Dubai Affair, out of a five-time Listed winner (5-7f) who was a half sister to July Cup winner Sakhee’s Secret, very useful sprinter Palace Moon, useful 6f-1m winner Duke Of Modena and several other winners. From a lovely sprint family lovingly built up over the years by the late Bridget Swire, and this filly’s handler trained her full sister to good effect whilst their July Cup winner Sakhee’s Secret is also in the family; clearly going to be happiest over sprint distances.

6. Bold Lass (9/4 b f Sea The Stars – My Branch)
Trainer: David Lanigan Owner: Bjorn Nielsen

Half sister to Haydock Cup Sprint winner Tante Rose, 7f 2yo Listed winner Bay Tree, Listed-placed 1m 3yo winner Melodramatic, dual 6f winner Priceless Jewel and 6f 2yo debut winner Rosie’s Posy, out of a smart 5-7f winner (including twice at Listed level)/Irish 1000 Guineas third who was a half sister to very smart 2m hurdler Celestial Halo. Beautifully-bred filly who is bred to make her mark as a juvenile, though she may want seven furlongs to begin with given her sire’s stamina influence; family have an excellent record at two, plenty winning on debut or second time out.

7. Cycle (11/2 b f Dansili – Ithaca)
Trainer: Sir Henry Cecil Owner: Khalid Abdulla

Full sister to high-class miler Zacinto and a half sister to 1m 3yo winner Complexion and 10f 3yo winner Cayuga, out of a Group 3/Listed-placed 7f 2yo debut winner who was a half sister to smart middle distance performer Many Volumes, 11f 3yo debut winner World Domination and 6f 2yo debut winner Western Verse out of Fillies’ Mile/Oaks winner Reams Of Verse. This well-bred filly is from a family her veteran handler knows very well, training the dam and most of her relations, albeit this is the first foal from the mare he has trained (previous four foals all been in the care of Sir Michael Stoute); full brother, Zacinto, was an impressive debut winner at two, as was the dam and a fair few of her relations, so it is highly likely this daughter of Dansili can make an immediate impact.

8. Dreaming Beauty (16/3 b f Oasis Dream – Independence)
Trainer: Jeremy Noseda Owner: Saeed Suhail

(200,000gns) Full sister to smart 8-12f winner (including at Group 2 level)/St Leger third Monitor Closely and a half sister to very smart 7-10f winner (including the 10f Group 1 Eclipse Stakes) Mount Nelson, 8-10f winner Stone Of Scone and 7f 2yo debut winner Singersongwriter, out of a high-class 7f-1m winner (including at Group 2/3 level). Group-winning dam has already produced a pair of Group winners, including Eclipse hero Mount Nelson; should prove capable of making some sort of impact over 7f/1m during the second half of the season.

9. Empiric (31/1 b c New Approach – Speirbhean)
Trainer: Mahmood Al Zarooni Owner: Godolphin

Three-parts brother to 2006 Champion Two-Year-Old Teofilo, 7f 3yo debut winner Teo’s Sister and 10f 3yo winner Senora Galilei (all by Galileo), out of an Irish 1000 Guineas trial winner. Obviously a very interesting prospect for the season ahead, being a close relation of top-class juvenile Teofilo and by a sire whose first crop included Dawn Approach and Newfangled; stable does wellwith its 2yos and no surprise to see this colt prove up to the task at the first time of asking; will want 7f.

10. Entiqaam (11/2 b/br c Sea The Stars – Cuis Ghaire)
Trainer: Dermot Weld Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

First foal of a high-class triple 6f 2yo winner (including twice at Group 3 level)/1000 Guineas runner-up who was a full sister to 7f 2yo debut winner/Coronation Stakes runner-up/1000 Guineas third Gile Na Greine and Group 3-placed 1m 3yo winner/Irish 1000 Guineas fourth Claiomh Solais. Excellent pedigree and looks the type to make up into a two-year-old at some stage, more than likely from the summer onwards; likely to be seen in one of the better Irish maidens, and plenty in the family were sharp enough to make a significant impact on debut.

11. Ertijaal (11/3 b c Oasis Dream – Shabiba)
Trainer: William Haggas Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

Half brother to connections’ Listed-placed 6f 2yo debut winner Odooj out of a smart 6f-1m winner (including at Listed level) who was a half sister to smart 6f 2yo winner Darajaat (Group 3/Listed placed) out of a high-class 6-7f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) who was herself a half sister to 5-12f winner Mustajed and 6f 2yo debut winner Muqtarb. His half brother became his stable’s first 2yo winner of 2012 and his dam and several of her relations were sharp enough to either win or go close to doing so; could be one to catch on debut, and ought to prove fully effective over 6f.

12. Eternitys Gate (28/2 b c Dutch Art – Regency Rose)
Trainer: Peter Chapple-Hyam Owner: Fitri Hay

(190,000gns) Half brother to smart 6-7f 2yo (including at Group 3 level)/2m hurdle winner Regional Counsel and 1m 3yo winner Regal Salute, out of an unraced sister to Cheveley Park Stakes winner Regal Rose. Went for a good amount at auction and has the paper credentials to make up into a smart early-season sprinting juvenile, certainly in the right hands to do well in his first season; will have the speed for sprinting but could well get 7f as the year progresses.

13. Fallen In Line (3/3 b c Pivotal – Fallen Star)
Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Normandie Stud

Full brother to connections’ smart 7-10f winner (including at Listed level) Fallen Idol and a half brother to their 2012 Coronation Stakes winner Fallen For You and Group 2/Listed-placed 1m 2yo winner Fallen In Love, out of a smart 7f-1m winner (including at Listed level) who was a half sister to Lockinge winner Fly To The Stars. His top handler has enjoyed a good deal of recent success with the family, sending out a couple of siblings to winning debuts, including last year’s Coronation Stakes winner Fallen For You; this colt is also one to watch out for first time up in a late summer/autumn 7f maiden.

14. Gulland Rock (26/4 b c Exceed And Excel – Sacre Coeur)
Trainer: William Muir Owner: Clive Edginton

(60,000gns) Half brother to connections’ Group 2-placed 5-6f 2yo winner (including at Listed level) Stepper Point out of a 6f 2yo winner who was a half sister to a handful of winners, most notably useful 5-7f winner Indian Trail. His handler trained his half brother to a hat-trick of wins at two, culminating in a Listed success; no reason why he won’t prove as effective in his first season, bred to be an out-and-out speedster, too.

15. Homestretch (17/3 b c Holy Roman Emperor – Sharp Mode)
Trainer: Mick Channon Owner: Prince A A Faisal

Half brother to connections’ promising 7f 2yo winner Amralah and 5f 2yo selling winner Midget, out of an unraced sister to 10f Flat/dual 2m 1f hurdle winner Sharp Dresser and a half sister to triple 7f 3yo winner More Modern out of a maiden half sister to Fillies’ Mile/Oaks winner Reams Of Verse, Eclipse/Irish Champion winner Elmaamul, Yorkshire Cup winner Manifest. Good pedigree, and his half brother looked a promising sort in two runs for these connections last term; may have the speed to start out over 6f, given he’s by a noted producer of speedy and precocious juveniles.

16. King’s Land (23/1 b/br c New Approach – Kazzia)
Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor Owner: Godolphin

Half sister to high-class 8-12f winner (including the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic), smart 8-9f 2yo winner (including at Group 3 level) Zeitoper and smart 8-10f winner (including at Listed level) Kailani, out of a 1000 Guineas/Oaks winner from a good German family. This colt is bred to want middle distances in 2014, but three of his siblings proved up to the task on debut and his sire enjoyed success with his first crop last term; all the ingredients are there for this colt to do well throughout the latter stages of the season; will want 1m straight away.

17. Man Of Harlech (14/4 b c Dansili – Ffestiniog)
Trainer: Andrew Balding Owner: Elite Racing Club

Half brother high-class 6f-1m winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) Border Patrol, smart multiple 5-7f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) Eisteddfod, smart 7f-1m winner (including at Group 3 level) Boston Lodge, very useful 5-7f winner Brecon Beacon (Grade 2 placed in the US) and three other winners, out of a smart 6f-1m winner (including at Listed level). Related to several winners, including one or two that were able to achieve quite plenty in their first season; would be disappointing if this colt couldn’t win his maiden at the very least, and may well prove sharp enough to debut over 6f.

18. Mihany (6/3 b c Teofilo – Love Excelling)
Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

(600,000gns) Half brother to smart 6f-1m winner (including twice at Listed level) Dunboyne Express and promising 7f 2yo debut winner Race And Status, out of a half sister to Oaks winner Love Divine. It was no surprise to see this colt command such a hefty price tag at auction, coming from a family that continues to go from strength to strength, his half brother impressing hugely on debut last autumn; has an awful lot going for him, and it would therefore be a bit disappointing if he couldn’t make a significant impact at two at trips up to 1m.

19. Montone (9/2 ch c Danehill Dancer – Leocorno)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Owner: Ballymacoll Stud

First foal of a Listed-placed 8-9f winner who was a half sister to 2000 Guineas/King George winner/Derby runner-up Golan and Dante winner/Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer among others. This colt’s pedigree suggests he will do better next season, but, whilst that has been the case for almost all of the family, his dam and several of her relations were able to achieve plenty at two from a limited number of opportunities; sire a speed influence, and quite possible that this colt can nick a race towards the backend of the season over 7f/1m.

20. Muheed (31/1 b c Raven’s Pass – Wolf Cleugh)
Trainer: Richard Hannon Owner: H E Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani

(130,000gns) Half brother to smart prolific 5-6f winner (including Group 2/3 level) Moss Vale, useful six-time 6f winner Cape Vale, fairly useful multiple 5-6f winner Jarrow and one or two other winners, out of a maiden half sister to 8-12f winner Stadler and 10f 3yo winner Radical Chic. Sold for a good amount and has a solid pedigree, being related to a trio of at least fairly useful sprinters and by a sire who enjoyed plenty of 2yo winners with his first crop; likely to possess the requisite speed to start out in sprint maidens.

21. Munaaser (17/2 b c New Approach – Safwa)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

First foal of a 1m 3yo winner who was a full sister to 1m 1f 3yo winner Almuktahem and a half sister to very smart middle distance performer Maraahel, Britannia Handicap winner Mostashaar and to the dam of connections’ smart miler Tazahum. From a family this stable has enjoyed plenty of success with throughout the last decade, and he is by a sire whose first crop made a big impression at two; will want 7f to begin with.

22. Mushir (27/3 b c Oasis Dream – Shimah)
Trainer: Roger Varian Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

First foal of a Group 1-placed dual 6f 2yo winner (including at Listed level) who was a half sister to high-class 6-7f winners Haatef (including at Group 2/Listed level) and Walayef (including at Group 3/Listed level), smart multiple 6f winner (including at Listed level) Ulfah, 7f 3yo winner Soohaad and 7f 2yo debut winner Mooqtar out of a 7f winner in the US. Fascinating juvenile prospect, given that his dam and almost all of her siblings made winning debuts at two; almost certain to have the necessary speed to start out over 6f, and it would be no surprise to see him prove successful on debut.

23. Mutakayyef (5/5 ch c Sea The Stars – Infallible)
Trainer: William Haggas Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

(260,000gns) First foal of a twice Group 1-placed dual 7f winner (including at Group 3 level)/1000 Guineas fourth who was a full sister to dual 7f winner Thrill and closely related to 7f-1m 3yo winner Chilled out of a smart sprinter. One of the more interesting youngsters from the first crop of Sea The Stars, being the first foal of Nell Gwyn winner/1000 Guineas fourth Infallible, herself a debut winner at two; one to keep a close eye out for in one of the better 7f maidens during the summer/autumn months.

24. Muteela (19/2 b f Dansili – Nufoos)
Trainer: Mark Johnston Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum

Half sister to connections’ Middle Park winner Awzaan, their very useful 8-10f winner Hajras and 7f 2yo winner Tasfeya, out of a smart 5-7f winner (including at Listed level) who was from the family of Watching. Powerful northern stable have trained all three of the dam’s winning offspring, including Middle Park hero Awzaan; should be able to make her mark in her first season, too, and is likely to benefit from 7f.

25. Naadirr (7/2 b c Oasis Dream – Beach Bunny)
Trainer: Marco Botti Owner: Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum

(425,000gns) First foal of a Group 1-placed 8-10f winner (including at Listed level) who was a half sister to 6f 3yo winner Robinson Cruso. Sold for almost half a million at auction, so clearly has the looks to match his pedigree; dam improved significantly in her second season, but she was related to one or two that were okay at two and this colt should be seen at some stage this term, most probably over 7f.

26. New Street (13/4 gr c Acclamation – New Deal)
Trainer: Richard Fahey Owner: David Armstrong

(£105,000) Full brother to useful 6-12f winner Alrasm and 5f 2yo debut winner New Pearl, out of a 1m 3yo winner who was a half sister to Lowther Stakes third Dunloskin out of a daughter of a high-class French/US sprinter. Both his brothers wasted no time in breaking their maiden, with New Pearl an impressive winner on debut last May (never went on); sold for six-figures at auction and is with a top stable, so it would be disappointing if he couldn’t make up into a good sort this year; sprint distances will suit.

27. Notebook (23/3 b c Invincible Spirit – Love Everlasting)
Trainer: William Haggas Owner: Highclere Thoroughbred Racing – Brunel

(110,000gns) Half brother to Listed-placed 12f 3yo winner Acquainted, useful dual 7f 2yo winner Penny Rose and 2m 3yo winner Yours Ever, out of a high-class 7-12f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level). Year older half sister Penny Rose was a useful performer at two,  giving hope that this colt can also achieve something of note in his first season, unlike his other two successful siblings; sire’s progeny often do well at two, and this colt may possess the speed to begin at six furlongs, for all 7f will prove within reach before too long.

28. Oasis Fantasy (16/4 b c Oasis Dream – Cara Fantasy)
Trainer: Ed Dunlop Owner: Windflower Overseas Holdings Inc

Half brother to very smart 7f-1m winner (including twice at Group 3 level)/Racing Post Trophy runner-up Elusive Pimpernel, smart 8-10f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) Palavicini, fairly useful 10-12f winner Miss Topsy Turvy and 10f 2yo winner Better Be Mine, out of a dual 12f winner from a good middle distance/staying family. Interesting proposition for the year ahead, for the dam’s two colts to date have proven themselves to be significantly better than the three fillies that have followed since; worth watching out for once the 7f maidens begin in earnest in the summer.

29. Obsidian (17/1 b c Street Cry – Latice)
Trainer: John Gosden Owner: George Strawbridge

Full brother to 7f 2yo Listed winner/Racing Post Trophy third Fencing out of top-class French/US 8-12f winner (including the French Oaks) who was a half sister to French Derby/Prix Jean Prat winner Lawman and the high-class 7f-1m French winner (including at Group 3 level) Satri, excellent French middle distance family. Full brother Fencing quickly made up into a smart performer at two and no reason why this colt won’t also prove as effective in his first season; will stay 1m.

30. Oriel (21/2 b f Fastnet Rock – Labisa)
Trainer: Richard Hannon Owner: Highclere Thoroughbred Racing – Petrushka

(60,000gns) First foal of a 7f 3yo winner who was a half sister to high-class 6-7f winner (including at Group 2/Listed level) Stimulation and a fairly useful 7-10f winner Desert Cristal, family of smart French/US miler Dirca. From the first Northern Hemisphere crop of Fastnet Rock and has enough about her on pedigree to suggest she’ll achieve plenty at two; certainly with the right stable, and may prove sharp enough to begin over sprint distances.

31. Pantoloni (13/4 b c Dansili – Short Skirt)
Trainer: Mahmood Al Zarooni Owner: Godolphin

Half brother to Listed-placed 7f 2yo debut winner Minidress out of a high-class 7-12f winner (including twice at Group 3 level) who was a full sister to 1m 2yo debut winner Shorthand and a half sister to very smart 7-14f winner (including at Group 2 level) Whitewater Affair (later dam of Dubai World Cup winner Victoire Pisa), high-class 7-12f winner Little Rock and other winners. Comes from a good middle distance family and will ultimately prove best at trips in excess of 1m, but several of his relations have struck at the first time of asking, including half sister Minidress; one to watch out for when debuting in the second half of the season, sure to kick off over either 7f or 1m.

32. Pivotal Bride (14/4 ch f Dubawi – Brazilian Bride)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute Owner: Saeed Suhail

(€220,000) Half sister to 6f 2yo AW winner Rivellino and 5f 3yo winner Brazilian Breeze, out of a smart 5-6f winner (including at Group 3 level) who was a half sister to Group 3-placed 7f 2yo winner Brazilian Star, 5-7f winner Brazilian Spirit, 6f 3yo winner Brazilian Sun, 7f 3yo winner Brazilian Beauty and 6f 2yo winner Bahama Spirit. She comes from a stable that adopts a patient stances with its youngsters these days, but this daughter of Dubawi is a half sister to a 6f 2yo winner and out of a smart performer who won by 8 lengths on debut; ought to make some sort of impact at two, likely to prove best over sprint distances.

33. Precariously Good (21/2 b f Oasis Dream – Danceabout)
Trainer: David Barron Owner: Pearl Bloodstock Limited

Half sister to French 1m 1f Listed winner Rainbow Dancing, useful 8-12f winner Handsome Man and 6f 2yo winner Zaffaan, out of a high-class 7f-1m winner (including at Group 2/Listed level) who was from a very successful family. Went unsold for six-figures at auction and appeals as the type on pedigree to do well at two, likely to possess the speed to start out over six furlongs though will undoubtedly want a bit further in time; stable does well with the small sample of two-year-olds they get annually.

34. Prince Of Stars (15/4 b c Sea The Stars – Queen’s Logic)
Trainer: John Gosden Owner: Jaber Abdullah

Half brother to triple Group 1-placed 5-6f winner (including at Group 2/3 level) Lady Of The Desert, 6f-1m winner Go On Be A Tiger, 6f 3yo AW winner Dunes Queen and UAE 1m 3yo winner Enjoy Today, out of a Queen Mary/Cheveley Park Stakes winner who was a half sister to Arc winner Dylan Thomas, 1000 Guineas winner Homecoming Queen and Oaks runner-up Remember When. One of the most exciting 2yo prospects going in to 2013, being by a much-anticipated first-season sire and out of a top-class 2yo who has already produced a smart performer; in excellent hands and something of a disappointment if he couldn’t win his maiden at the very least this term; seven furlongs should prove his optimum distance.

35. Ragged Robbin (27/2 ch c Speightstown – Ikat)
Trainer: David Lanigan Owner: Niarchos Family

Half brother to connections’ high-class 8-12f winner (including at Group 3 level)/Derby runner-up Main Sequence out of a French Group 2/Listed-placed 7f 2yo debut winner who was a half sister to last season’s smart French middle distance performer Smoking Sun, further family of Shiva and Light Shift. His excellent handler did well with half brother Main Sequence, who emulated his dam when making a winning debut at two before progressing into a high-class middle distance performer; one to look forward to for the second half of the season, and is likely to stay 1m without too many problems this term.

36. Regiment (22/4 ch c Major Cadeaux – My First Romance)
Trainer: Richard Fahey Owner: T G & Mrs M E Holdcroft

Half brother to Queen Mary winners Romantic Liason and Romantic Myth, useful 8-9 3yo winner Chapter Seven, useful dual 5f winner Zargus, UAE 7f winner Maath Gool, 6f 2yo debut winner Alkhafif and 7f 2yo debut winner Wedaad, out of a maiden daughter of a Group 3-placed 7f 2yo winner. This colt is very much bred to make a sizable impact early on in his two-year-old campaign, being a half brother to a quartet of debut winners including a pair of Queen Mary winners; very surprising if he isn’t up to winning his maiden, and may well be the fifth product of the dam to do so on debut.

37. Renown (23/5 ch c Champs Elysees – Fame At Last)
Trainer: Dermot Weld Owner: Khalid Abdulla

Closely related to connections’ very smart prolific 6-10f winner (including 20 times at Group 2/3/Listed level) Famous Name and high-class dual 7f 2yo winner (including at Group 3 level) Big Break (both by Dansili) and a half brother to Group 3-placed 7-10f winner (including at Listed level) Zaminast and 1m 3yo debut winners Everlasting Fame and Photo Opportunity, out of a 7f 2yo debut winner. This colt is a very late foal and may need more time/distance than has been the case with one or two of his relations, but Famous Name (8th May) was also a late foal and still prove capable of making an instant impact, whilst fellow close relation Big Break should’ve gone a lot closer first time out; his half brothers/sister made winning debuts (two for this stable), and it would be something of a surprise if this colt couldn’t make some sort of impact in the latter stages of the season.

38. Rush (19/2 ch f Compton Place – Dorelia)
Trainer: Paul Cole Owner: Denford Stud

Half sister to connections’ smart 5-7f winner (including at Group 3 level) Rimth out of a 1m 3yo AW winner who was a full sister to fairly useful 5-6f winner Bowness and a half sister to Cornwallis/King’s Stand winner Dominica out of a smart speedster.
