I've wondered Rydal, but then I look at this year's Triumph compared to last year and I don't know what's going on. Sometimes it just seems there are hardly any backers on here.
There are always people moaning about liquidity, but I firmly believe that most people will get matched on here if they stick their bet up - they just seem to be afraid that they're showing their hand. Or is there something else? Have bots ruined the value? Or is the recession biting into discretionary spending?

The GN win pool (to back) was running at 104% this morning. Given that layers are lodging funds to cover liabilities and allowing for the number of horses likely to be balloted out, there is no logic to it.

Which suggests too many layers and not enough backers?
The RSA at Cheltenham has regularly gone below 100% and that's a complete market - no supplementary. The Gold Cup has been similar once you subtract the 1000.0 chances.
I really don't know how layers are supposed to make a living in these hard times, Rydal.

"Which suggests too many layers and not enough backers?"
This isn't supported by the volume, Pete. For example, at the GN first forfeit suspension last year, the total matched was £384k - this year it was virtually the same - £381k. The win market was running at 118.6% at suspension last year - this year it was running at 109.0%. The number of runners was about the same (80 last year - 81 this year).Someone is trying to lay Major Malarkey for £35.42 at 830 - that's 30 grand lodged with BF. The next highest price is 520.
I have started backing this year - it's like changing your religion!

Which makes you an apostate!
I've been backing too - just to try and straighten out some of the awful books I've got.
It's interesting about the GN. I know there are people who keep 100k+ in their accounts because I've seen individual bets appearing and disappearing for more than that. It's an awful whack of money to have tied up for betting, but I suppose it's all relative.
