Well I haven't ....but I have.
This horse was listed on the Racing Post website until, say, last week as Finn McCool. And is still available to back with a couple of bookies under that name for next seasons Derby.
Anyone know whether this horse has been sold to the far east, as I didn't think a name could be changed in the UK & Ireland once registered.
This is a well bred Coolmore horse, and I've not noticed them change a name, or sell on such good bloodstock like this before its made a track debut.

Seems as though you can change a name, so long as the horse hasn't raced....even if it holds current entries i.e Derby
I'd say its unusual for Coolmore to do so though.....Mr & Mrs Smith must have had a few memorable nights in Sardinia they wanted something to remind them of.

Ok...so some views of this thread but no posts...bar me. No problems as this thread by it's title affect very few people.
but it affects everyone on Betfair.
Quite simply Betfair are allowing trading on a horse with a name that doesn't exist. Finn McCool is no longer (under that name anyway)...yet appears on the list of the Betfair Derby ante post market.
This change has happened...apparently that's ok......but who informs the bookies?
Where's the 'corporate governance' in this. No audit trail appears to be in existence between the BHA/ HRI and the 'clients' ...in this case the bookies and the punters.

No, not a tip. I am merely highlighting the issue that the rules allow a name change after initial name registration. I think the process needs tightening. Once named...no change
I’d say it probably doesn’t happen too often, and I can’t remember Coolmore doing this before.
I am now aware that Dubai Millenium was initially called Yazzer. The name change came about once Godolphin realised how good the horse was going to be. I doubt that this is the same with Sardinia (nee. Finn McCool).
This horse is very well bred, so Ballydoyle will have had expectations regards the horse before he even arrived in Rosegreen.
AO’B is a man of pattern. There are a few 2yo maiden races that he targets each year with his best 2yo colts. I had backed Finn McCool of that back of one of those entries.....the Arc day meeting at Tipperary. He didn’t run, and hasn’t since. The entry though highlights his position in the pecking order at Ballydoyle......the other entry for that Tipp race that did run....Kingsbarns.
Finn McCool was also given entries in the late season Gp1’s, so I’d assume the only reason he didn’t set foot on track was the ground conditions.
Anyway now called Sardinia.
