Team 'heartbroken' as Go Native suffers fatal injury

GO NATIVE, a three-time Grade 1 winner over hurdles and who fell at the final flight when pressing Hurricane Fly in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown on Sunday, has had to be put down after breaking a hindleg while cantering on trainer Noel Meade's gallops on Friday morning.
An upset Meade said: "His owners and all of us here are heartbroken by what happened this morning. Go Native was doing a steady canter when he broke his off-hindleg above the hock. It happened about 100 yards from me and why it happened I don't know.
"He had been 100 per cent since Punchestown and was hacking through the week before we decided where he might run next. It's an awful loss and everyone here is gutted. His owners (the Docado Syndicate) had been so patient and we were all thrilled by how well he came back from such a long layoff.
"It's terrible and very hard to take. You need to made of steel in this business."
Winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, Go Native went to achieve further Grade 1 victories in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton later that year before starting favourite for the 2010 Champion Hurdle in which he finished tenth behind Binocular.
He was injured in the Cheltenham race and was off the track until last month when he twice ran on the Flat, winning a 1m6f amateur riders event at Galway under Nina Carberry.
He reverted to hurdles at Punchestown on Sunday and was delivering his challenge about a length behind Hurricane Fly when falling at the final flight

Genuinely sad news.
Although I don't recall ever backing the horse, I've always been an admirer. But for injury, he could easily have bagged a Champion Hurdle and was a real player this year in my view.
