opinion of the leading contenders Sea Moon - Enjoys give underfoot. Grt Volt win slamming Al khazeem reads as vg form. Not sure the opposition performed that day though. Memphis Ten - Solid form last year. Won a poor race in the mud at Chester very well. Aiken - Very progressive straight forward horse who looks to have everything in his favour. Dunaden- Given too much to do behind Aiken last time. Has some sort of chance. Could take a very good animal to break Aiken's series of victories and estimate his true price in this to be 9/4 and backed it at present best price 6/1.
ATR 22/6 Dunaden bids to confirm his middle-distance credentials when he contests the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.
Winner of the Melbourne Cup last year, he went on to land the Hong Kong Vase over 12 furlongs but has yet to make a mark in two starts at that trip this term, finishing third in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket before fellow Hardwicke runner Aiken had him in the same position at Chantilly.
Owned by Sheikh Fahad Al Thani's Pearl Bloodstock operation, his racing manager David Redvers said: "Mikel was of the view that he's not a two-and-a-half-mile horse. He's not a grinder, he's a bridle horse with a terrific turn of foot.
"You can totally ignore his last run in France and we think a stiff mile and a half at Ascot will suit him. Either he'll be a top mile-and-a-half horse and we can look towards the King George, or otherwise he's a very good stayer. Either way we can look back towards the Melbourne Cup later in the year."
Red Cadeaux finished just behind Dunaden in both Australia and Hong Kong and the pair clash again. Ed Dunlop's charge has enjoyed a fine start to his 2012 campaign, pushing subsequent Gold Cup winner Colour Vision all the way in the Sagaro Stakes on his seasonal bow.
He then won the Yorkshire Cup before putting up what was arguably a career-best effort to be second in the Coronation Cup at Epsom.
"This is our third run against Dunaden and he's come out on top twice already, but I can safely say our season has gone happier than his to date," said Dunlop.
"I thought William Buick rode a great race the last day in France (on Aiken) and Dunaden had too much to do but all that aside, we've been very happy with our horse. He'll like the ground, despite having run well on fast ground, he's very adaptable and we used to think he wanted it soft.
Dunlop also has another runner in the shape of French import Testosterone, formerly trained by Pascal Bary and second in the Prix Vermeille last season.
"She's been bought to join us and has some very decent form in France, but it will be tough for her. She had an early setback and needed an operation on her sinuses and because of the programme for older fillies, this is the first place we could start her off. It will be very tough for her," said Dunlop

Sea Moon didn't look particualry impressive when he scraped home from Dandino on his seasonal debut but given he had so much size and scope for improvement last year he would have needed that race a fair bit i'd say given they dont give a fuss about winning Listed races with this horse. He will enjoy the cut in the ground and his 2 1/2 lenght defeat by St.Nick is probably the best form on offer. 11/4 is OK without knocking your socks off.
Dunaden looked class last year but was aggresively campaigned and im not sure he has shown he is back to that form yet.
Ed Dunlop has done a great job with Red Cadeuax, who does have speed for 12f, but he is rather exposed and on a line through St.Nick the Fav has the beating of him.
Aiken is progressive and merits plenty of respect but is taking on a Group 1 horse here imo, so needs to find more improvement.
Unoriginal but im backing the Fav to win, gl.

Stoute intended on running sea Moon in the Derby last year but he missed it due to a setback. Is MT a potentially Group 1 horse iyo?

Think he's open to more improvement, similar prep to Await The Dawn I guess
4th in a Derby 3rd in the Irish is good form and this only his 7th career start should be open to more improvement
A lot of the rest of the field appear to want further than 12f imo

I am finding this one of the hardest races of the week and it will be a no bet race for me. Can see the arugments for all of those prominent in the betting with the only one I would readily dismiss out of the top 5 being Dunaden.
Despite his age, Red Cadeaux seems to be still improving and if forced to have a bet, him e/w would be my play on his ideal ground.
G/L to those playing

I think horses that are a little fresher than others will fare best here,Sea Moon and MT both each way the picks for me,although I think Sea Moon would probably prefer a bit of ease in the ground as opposed to out and out soft,a fair few horses have benefitted from bypassing Epsom this wk.

Drift doesn't put me off in the slighest, just pointing it out thats all. Only the other day I managed to back a horse with Ladbrokes at 13/2 that ended with an SP of 17/2! (Princess Highway) So these drifts are not always what they seem.
Nahrain in the Windsor Forest absolutley stunk the house out though. I could smell that one down the street.

Good pick Plat and Sint Sea Moon - Looked significantly better than these. Likes some cut ,but ground cann't of been that far off good here. Dunaden- Looked great pre-race, probably needs further Red Cadeux - Very consistent and a useful marker horse. Aiken - ran a bit free , but wasn't good enough. (overated the ability of this horse) Not sure how Sea Moon would get on in the KG ,but on good or softer ground has to have a big chance and showed he liked the track today.

Tom Segal states in the weekender - "I honestly believe Dunaden would have beaten Sea Moon if he had enjoyed a similar run through the race" When first reading this it looked a bizarre statement to me, but given the person saying it is imo a very good judge ,the race needs closer scrutiny. Dunaden was hampered twice ,once on the final bend and once up the home straight before appearing to finish with plenty left in the tank. Dunaden is not a horse with a turn of foot ,he's a horse that comes with a long sustained run that was impeded twice, the question is ,was that enough to prevent him from winning. Hand held sectional times suggest it may well have been. Both horses clocked a very similar time up the straight ,despite Dunaden losing momentum coming into the straight and losing momentum up the straight. This appears to suggest that Dunaden was indeed unlucky and may well have won with a clear passage. With both likely to meet again in the KG the question then becomes am I willing to put money on Dunaden beating Sea Moon? If he was 20/1 it would be an easy decision but at 8/1 it isn't as i'm not totally convinced Dunaden would have won due to other variables (e.g Moore slightly easing up).

If "Dunaden is not a horse with a turn of foot ,he's a horse that comes with a long sustained run" is fact, I would imagine Ascot will always present problems for him, tinkler.

Find it hard to believe that a 6 year old is suddenly going to improve to win a race like this. It's one thing to run on well several lengths behind the winner - quite another to do it when you're in front.

HM - A big field coupled with a tightish bend coming into the home straight could cause problems for a horse like Dunaden ,especially of an average to slow pace. But this is unlikley to be the case in the KG ,where atm AOB holds nearly half the enteries. A smallish field could line up including a couple of AOB pacemakers who will probably stretch the field to the effect that Dunaden will be able to get his clear run. Given that the horse is a ball of muscle and the last mile is uphill, under these circumstances Ascot could well be a favourable track for Dunaden. A T - I don't know what he looked like before but he looked in the best condition I've seen any horse look pre-race all season and not only did he improve a lot as a 5 y/o but he may still be improving. A 6 y/o improving is pretty rare and trends and stat's will be against him. But this should add to an inflated price . Some of the best bets in racing are imo often horses that defy all the pre-race trends. Despite all this the bottom line is I haven't backed the horse yet and may not which is basically down to his present price which doesn't look big enough taking into account the additional presence of SNA and CDA.

Agree AT. Sea Moon still has plenty more to offer. Stoutey would have left something at home the last day.
Quite enjoying all this talk about Dunaden being unlucky. It should lead to better prices on the front pair.
