Are Sizing Europe & Big Zeb set to take each other on again, just like last year? I can't see Finian's Rainbow showing up, so this should be between the two former Champion Chasers.
Big Zeb was disappointing in the QM Champion Chase last year, but then turned the form around with Sizing Europe at Punchestown.
Can lightning strike twice, or has Murphy's charge begun to hit the downward slope, as last month's showing at Cheltenham would suggest?
I don't think Rubi Light will see out the 3 miles, especially on soft. I would have been all over Captain Chris if it was good ground but alas it isn't.

Seems Boston Bob has sparked quite a bit of interest on here! Sir Des Champs is clearly a very good horse and i will be backing him in a 4-fold - don't see the ground being a problem as he has won on heavy before and let's be honest any horse that can win a string of races in this country (Ireland) need to be able to act on soft/heavy ground haa
Quevega isn't a worry for me - the ground may not be what we are used to seeing her hack up on but then again it all comes down to what exactly does she have to beat in this race that she hasn't already previously beat? I get Voler La Vedette had a very good outing last time but it's not enough to convinve me she is up to beating a horse of Quevega's calibre I mean in the past 4 years she hasn't put a hoof wrong!

Nothing can be done though Eddie, it's heavy ground. Whats the point of bottoming a horse who cant go on that ground?
Hurricane Fly is going to have nearly no rivals to face, Overturn and Zarkander defo n/r. Thousand Stars will be bottomed if running. Unaccompanied couldn't go in the ground in Jan.
He's got nothing to beat.

I understand that and no one is to blame but the 3 graded races tomorrow have been decimated.2 bumpers on heavy ground are not exactly appealing leaving a hunters chase and a handicap hurdle. Still better than the dross on elsewhere of course but just a dissapointing start to the meeting

Though I've had plenty of plays antepost on all horses who will love the mud this week. So i'm not as disappointed as I would have been had I not played ap.
I've trifolium 9/4, Alderwood 7/1, Mossey Joe ew 14/1, Zeb ew 5/1, plus Trifolium, Sir Des Champs, Sizing Europe treble. All placed a few days ago. So it's looking ok for me.
Lost bet on zaarito ew 33/1 though. Baffled why he's a n/r tbh.

I think coming 2nd in Lexus behind eventual Gold Cup winner is good staying form. The thing to remember is he is better in soft than on good. So what you might think will test his stamina more actually boosts his chances, he needs the soft for his leg action. He relishes it.
I think with the pace Quel Esprit will bowl along at given he likes soft and stays all day, plenty will be in trouble long way out, except Rubi. He may not see the trip as well as Quel or Quito De Le Roque, but he'd be a very solid ew bet @ 5/1.

RP 23/4 -HEAVY rain at Punchestown overnight has dramatically changed the ground with conditions verging on heavy and more downpours forecast before the start of the track's festival on Tuesday. On Sunday the going was good to soft, soft in places but following 13mm of rain it has eased to soft, soft to heavy in places.
Racing manager Richie Galway said: "It is going to be the most testing festival for quite some time. When I started in 1998 it was a very hard week and the ground was heavy throughout and we could get the same here.
"We have the benefit that we have been able to rest the ground all winter and we have fresh ground every day on the hurdle track, but we are due up to 30mm before Friday when the showers are forecast to clear."
The ground on the cross-country course was also changed tosoft from good, good to soft in places.

i've had a bet on quantitativeeasing for the punch gold cup. he doesn't usually go well fresh so it wasn't a huge surprise he couldn't land a blow at cheltenham being off the course since december. he's going to stay and he goes on the ground. there are enough doubts about the rest to chance him at 12/1.
quel esprit is a joke price on what he's done, although conditions are in his favour. rubi light has his ground but a worry about the trip. captain chris won't like the ground. follow the plan just ran a huge race at aintree and will find one or two too good. noble prince has been out of sorts all year, realt dubh unknown at the trip and seasonal debut wasnt that encouraging. china rock probably wont get home and the rest are outclassed.

Voler la Vadette looks a decent price this week. I know Big Buck's was nowhere near all out in the World Hurlde but she got within a couple of lengths which, if read literally, is much better than Quevega managed at the Festival. Plus Q's last 3 defeats have come on "Very soft" twice at Auteil and Soft-Heavy at Punchestown. She's only raced on Good in the last 3 years. VlV seems to handle the likely ground much better than Q.
I know everyone always says this, but is this the day Quevega gets beat?

She is vulnerable imo. But I think Voler would prefer it quicker too, and she may be feeling her season now. quevega would prob be a shade odds on shot to win this meaning evens is little to no value.

I thought this week was going to promising in terms of returns but so disappointed now! Haven't yet seen Boston Bob's price but i'm sure it's around 1/2 or 2/5 now! Yeah Sizing at 1/2 i'll hit it a rattle myself.

I might give a chance to Thousand Stars if he does run this week. I think both he and Oscar Whisky paid the price for trying to go with Big Bucks too early on. Look at where Mourad finished who was also prominent early and he's usually a decent consistent horse. Voler and Smad place were potentially flattered imo.

GCW, I think Smad Place was indeed flattered as he was ridden for what he got - i.e. to place. VlV cruised into contention 2 f out and was only outstayed in the finish - i.e. she was easily the best of those ridden to win. As always we don't know how easily BB won - he appeared to have plenty left in the tank - so it's hard to put a bare value on the form.
CVB - I agree VlV is probably better on good ground, but she clearly acts on Soft - Soft/Heavy, which is not clear with Quevega. She's also more than 3 times the price. I accept that VlV may feel a much harder race at the Festival (and season) than Quevega.

It is hard to know where you were directing all your points CVB so i will ignore the more general statements.
In terms of the 3 that seem to be directed at me -
1. RC if he didn't handle the ground how did he come 2nd? Is that a serious question? I assume not.
2. Breeding says he handles good ground and I'm sorry but 1 hurdles run where he nearly won on good ground doesn't mean he doesn't handle it. Especially when he ain't a hurdler. I did not say he will never handle quicker ground only that i do not think he handled it LTO (the quickest ground he has ever encountered). It is a fact that Mullins received the soft-ground-preferring Wylie horses.
3. Judge him when he jumps a fence. I'm sure he'll get some good ground over fences at some point next season before the festival. But I suppose the "wont handle good ground" is a pretty key and useful misconception of many Irish horses which we exploit to our fullest.
Regarding the horse's future over fences, I said - 'I agree though that BB is every inch a chaser, he could make up into a high class chaser'. Regarding his ground prefernce, see point 2.
I see your tone has not changed CVB - I now remember what was missing all winter.

GoldCupWinner there's no chance Thousand Stars runs in 3miler, same owners as Quevega. Will run in Champion hurdle and hope to chase Fly home. I've Zaidpour ew in that race with 3 places. I'm hopeful he'll run well in the mud.
Yes stront, VLV has handled soft before. Quevega did very well over 2m on heavy too only just beaten by top class 2milers Solwhit and Champion hurdler Punjabi. She'll handle the ground.
The problem is that others will relish it. So Young needs bottomless ground and he'll love it in the mud. Ignore all good ground form, so both his chelts runs.
There's dangers too both of them in this ground imo

RC, I keep mostly to our private racing forum, all us shrewdies don't like our good work to be free, betfair forums offer little but a bit of entertaining banter. I care little for your jibs, you seem to know it all too. Suffice to say I know 12/1 Boston Bob is an excellent bet for the RSA and speak with confidence that he'll be far less than half that price in feb next year.
Now lets move along to this years punchy festival

Mullins has 6 of the 13 entered in the world hurdle and an unbelievable 4 of the 6 in the Champion hurdle. If Overturn isn't to run due to the ground (though i've heard nothing from Mccain) you are left with 4 Mullins horses against The Real Article ,what if he goes lame overnight, your then left with the Mullins horses running against themselves which looks desperate for arguably Irelands best 2m hurdle of the year. Throw in that Quevaga ,1,ooo stars and Zaidpour are also down to run in the 3m as well and it hardly makes for attractive betting unless your in the inner circle and know what Mullins is going to do and he could do anything he likes as he's holding virtually all the aces.

Some of the UK trainers probably need to adopt a more open mind about this meeting, theres a lot of prize money on offer and if Cheltenham is to be used as a guide then the Irish horses are very beatable.

Be fair tinkler, this is the worst ground seen in many years. People not running their horses to bottom them out. 2 years ago there were loads of runners in each race, ground was good that year.

Is the prize money on offer not worth considering bottoming a horse out for ?
Surely there are plenty of UK horses who would revel in the ground. If the prize money won contributed towards the Uk Training title you could be pretty sure Henderson and Nichols would be sending plenty over , which imo is rather sad . I do accept your earlier point CV that some Uk punters struggle to understand Irish horses and their form and I'd include myself in that. If I keep watching it maybe at some point enlightenment will come.

I struggle to read Irish form too. I think I'll be lumping on Sizing Europe and then leave the meeting. He's going to have to seriously under perform to lose here. Only horse I am worried about is Realt Dubh who could be a bit of a dark horse in these conditions.

It's also 1-2 weeks closer to Aintree than usual, and as you hint Nicholls and Hendo have been throwing theor horses at the GB trainers championship. GB trainers might also be wary after seeing what happened to Denman and Kauto Star recently.

I'll try explain it in simplistic terms as racing is never simple.
Basically we know how most of our horses have to run on the ground the we get, whether they need good ground or not. You have to get races into horses.
So we get the majority of people from England looking at our horses who have won on soft and saying they wont get soft at Cheltenham, then we get horses who need good who lose over here on soft and have punters from England saying sure they're losing in Ireland, they're not good enough for Chelts.
When the reality is some horses who had to race on soft in Ireland and won on it are perfectly capable of running on good, they just haven't had good ground to run on.
Then there are some who have needed good ground and never had it, they've had to run over here as well as they can in defeat. So they improve when they get to Cheltenham and the good ground.
The final piece to the picture is if a horse goes to Cheltenham and loses, people come up with lots of great conclusions as to why it was beat, especially ones we Irish fancied. But the simple fact is you can't draw definitive conclusions from just 1 race.
For example is Fly over rated? or was he below par? or is he in decline? Nobody knows the answers to those based on 1 run.
As a rule, I pay attention to what trainers say all season, lots will say after a race in november the horse needed better ground or, he wouldn't want it too quick...etc..
Normal punters draw their own conclusions, but trainers are far far more reliable for info on their own horses than a punter posting on betfair or anywhere else. So look for quotes.

Like the look of Alderwood but think ground might suit Davy Russels horse better, Alderwood had a great Chelt so might bring that form into here. Could be decent value at 3s
Any thoughts?

Alderwood had a tough looking race to me at Fairyhouse. Trifolium ran a blinder in a top class Supreme imo, plus he'll love this ground, while Alderwood was kept away from the soft winter ground this season.
For me Trifolium wins so no point betting Alderwood, but an odds on Novice is not my cup of tea. So at current odds, no bet.
fwiw I've both backed, 9/4 Trifolium and 7/1 Alderwood. Just lucky the race cut up so much.

I do not claim to be omniscient CVB and I hope not too many other regular posters would accuse me of that. Probably the opposite, if anything. Anyway, enough 'entertainment' for one night. GL punting this week.

have laid off my stake on trifolium for a nice free bet, but honestly expect him to win on bridle. alderwood is a tough horse, but needs to pull out a lot more as trifolium will prove much harder to beat than allure of illusion. i expect he'll be prominent, sprint clear after two out and win eased down.
i've taken on sir des with mossey joe as it wasn't a good jewson, and his form in ireland is suspect.

sizing should win but has had a few hard races this year now, ground is gonna be awful, he's maybe a year or two older than ideal. almost looks like he'll win by default though.
alderwood could still be improving and don't think trofolium will have it as easy as the odds suggest.
cant take 1/4 against a novice chaser, especially up to the furthest he's been on very soft ground. sir des champs should win but don't think they'll want to flog him on that tomorrow, they'll obviously have an eye on the autumn/winter races.
may be lucky to get the five days on IMO if the rain keeps up.
maybe get the first three days done and then try and salvage the last two days next week if the forecast improves?

I've done Leah Claire ew 12/1 and Burrenbridge Lodge ew 16/1 in h/c hurdle. Plus a little on Ballyhaunis at 40s on here
Realt Dubh is the ew bet in Champ Chase @ 16/1 and 7/2 w/o fav is a good bet too.
Sir Des should win easily, I love Mossey Joe but the injury, and trainers comments put me off there so wouldn't bet at the prices now.
Instead did a little w/o fav acca. Alderwood, Realt Dubh, Mossey @ 24/1
AP bets on Trifolium and Alderwood are nice position in 2m nov hurdle.
catamongdepigeons, mates uncle trains and he thinks it'll win. But formless bumper races are carnage. Anyway took 11/2 on that.
I'm headed tomorrow to get a good soaking, should be fun none the less.

its hard to second guess willie, but he has mentioned both races, so don't think we'll know until tomorrow and he's decided what he's doing with his other half dozen in the three miler.
think he'd be the one to follow quevega home given the conditions and trip.

Yes Willie said he'd run him in the 2m champion hurdle on Friday. He has Quevega, So Young, Mourad and Mikael D'Haguenet for the 3miler. Zaidpour will love the heavy ground on Friday over 2m. I've him backed antepost with 3 places ew 14/1. Bet of the meeting imo.
Also Mullins is not hard to second guess if you follow Irish racing and his comments throughout the season, you also have to look at his team and see what will run where. It's pretty easy tbh.

Decent wedge on Fly @ 4/6 too. Horse will also love the ground and Thousand Stars had 2 hard races and has never beaten Fly.
Two plays in the race. Either winning is fine by me.

same here regarding fly got a decent bet on last night, 2/5 still not too bad will probably be far worse on the day.
also got the 4/6 in a double with quevega at 11/10.
can't see me backing much else there tbh.

Really liking Quantitativeeasing for the Gold Cup. Trip and ground should be no problem and his win over Medermit in a very fast time marked him as a future grade 1 winner.

Cancel the rest of the meeting, awful stuff. Pointless racing in that. Not a chance of me betting on any of the next 3 days.
Season over, now a long break from racing till the Old Roan in November.

Am back on QE but disappointed to have lost some of the value. Shadow Catcher looks good in the 4yo race, should reverse form with Hissy on this ground.

View of what happened in champion hurdle HF didn't travel great but got the job done. My overall view of this horse now is that he's on a downward curve possibly more mentally than physically. He's had a lot of races ,many on very soft ground with large weights and he's only small horse and maybe getting hacked off with it. Will take a lot of skill from Mullins to keep him sweet next year and he could end up being a bit hit and miss. With Mullins having 3 of the 4 runners it was obvious they had a plan for 1,000 stars to make the running to suit HF and Zaidpour. 1,000 stars was given the same pacemaker role under similar conditions in the Irish CH where it was obvious it didn't suit him and for me the race highlights the problem of having one trainer being able to have control over a race. O'brien has similar control in some of the Irish group races where a plan is put in to benefit a certain horse whilst others are not ridden to best effect. It doesn't lead to level playing field for the horses and for me is poor sportsmanship. In dubai where Mike de Koch and Godolphin have a similar stranglehold on some of the races they let their horses run on their own merits ,which for me is a lot more sporting and leads to more competitive racing. The other Irish trainers look to have their backs against the wall ,especially on the flat, and unless the coolmore trio split up and spread their horses about ( highly unlikely as there a money making operation) or other wealthy owners start to buy with other trainers, then it's only a matter of time before some of the Group 1 races are contested by Coolmore horses only.

Lets see how fly gets on with 3/4 prep runs before Cheltenham. It'll be clear if he's back to the horse he was within a few runs. He could be on a downward, we'll find out next season.

He ran awful though, no zip in his step. He is certainly got it to prove next season. Lets hope he can bounce back like other great horses have.
Mullins needs to run him 3 times before Cheltenham next season, and he needs to not be afraid to run him unfit. Racing will get him fit.

Not sure I agree with the 3 runners before Cheltenham theory ,to me his best run this year was first time out and since then he's got progressively worse. Could be a changing of the guard in the top Irish 2m hurdles next year with the progressive Unaccompanied taking over from HF.

I'd hardly call Unaccompanied progressive. I still think Fly will remain on top in Ireland at least. Nothing coming through to really challenge. But it will be interesting if he can recapture the form he was in last season.

I agree with that CVB. It was great to see him win but he did it without his usual pomp, though given the lacklustre run in March I'd be hopeful after a summer off he can come back refreshed and full of life, and maybe be campaigned a little more forcefully, as you say.

That is true Strontium. your saying that though brought back memories of the late, great and completely inimitable Sea Pigeon. I was fortunate enough to see him a few times at the Malton Open Day, lovely and old and placid. Sorry, I digress!
