Grand National (and other big handicaps)
All non-runners are losers except balloted horses, which are non-runners. Exposure off-setting is not allowed.

Melbourne Cup
All non-runners are losers including balloted horses. Exposure off-set is allowed.

US Masters (and other golf tournaments)
Non runner, no bet. This can result in huge changes in liability at start of play yet exposure offset is allowed.

Wimbledon Tennis
All non-runners are losers.  Exposure off-set is allowed.

Euro 2012 Top Goalscorer
All in, play or not. Exposure offset allowed.

Where is the consistency in these rules? The only consistent thing is the inconsistency, as far as I can see. The Grand National
market has completely fouled up my liquidity for the last 8-9 weeks. The US Masters nearly gave me a heart attack with a few late
non-runners. The whole thing is crazy. As a layer, I like the Wimbledon rules. Most of all, it's the offset rules that really annoy me.

GN market rules are pissin me off!
Report PeteTheBloke April 9, 2012 12:27 PM BST
Me too. They've completely bolloxed my ability to bet for 2 months. I won a coupla quid at Chelts
but it just disappeared into the GN black hole within a few days. I can't wait to get it over.

With the GN entries today, Betfair are holding back about 50 times the amount that the balloted horses could
cost me.
Report askari1 April 9, 2012 1:12 PM BST
They are mimicking the bookmaker rules on those events. It's not the rules for balloted-out horses that are anomalous; it's the way they grant exposure offsets.

Pete, any idea when the funds are released? Is it Thursday (when the market closes) or Friday (when the reserves are stood down)? I hope it's the former - I've kept back a few quid to lay the day of the race market but the high interest online banking account is looking bare!
Report PeteTheBloke April 9, 2012 8:15 PM BST
Sorry Rydal,
I've no idea. I was toying with the idea of putting all my savings into my BF account but couldn't bring
myself to do it. I've recycled all my Cheltenham money and I won a few quid here and there on other stuff
but I've been laying 2 quid bets. By this time last year I was laying horses to take buckets.

If there's a silver lining, I've probably had better value but I'd rather be getting 5% of a BIG pie,
than 8% of a very modest pie.

I was really hoping for a field of 39 today! It was too much to ask, I suppose.

PS Is that 50:1 ratio about the same for you now? Or even worse?
Report PeteTheBloke April 9, 2012 8:21 PM BST
Rydal - do you dabble in the golf at all? I know sod all about it and laid quite a bit on the Masters.
Had a bit of a brown-trouser job when the non-runners kept dropping. Managed to scrape home but didn't
enjoy it much. I was annoyed with myself, because I knew it could happen, but didn't budget very cleverly.
Report Rydal April 9, 2012 9:36 PM BST
Pete, my ratio is about 30 to 1, assuming Hello Bud, Neptune E, and down are balloted out. If there are 3 more out (not impossible) the ratio becomes more like 100 to 1.

I don't do Golf. Your story reminds me of the time I laid the first goal scorer market without reading the rules properly! I laugh about it now - I didn't then!
Report PeteTheBloke April 10, 2012 8:40 AM BST
Ha ha. That's the reason I was cross with myself - I knew it could happen, and still got wet.
Report penzance April 10, 2012 9:23 AM BST
can't see why you can't lay the top 40 in the
h'cap(offsetting)after every forfeit stage,at
least.

Tell Betfair, Penzance. I'm sick trying.
