Any reason why Harrington lost Dragon Pulse!?

Owner Dr Tan Kai Chah was a relieved man following the win of One More Minute in the $65,000 Graduation Stakes over 1600m on the Polytrack on Sunday.



But a lot of his thoughts were elsewhere following a special win in Ireland on Saturday.



The one and only horse he owns in Ireland – which came about following a marketing exercise by the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing team last year – was successful at the Curragh on Saturday night (Singapore time).



Dr Tan’s Dragon Pulse, ridden by Fran Berry who had a stint in Singapore towards the end of 2009 and early in 2010, took out the day’s feature event, the Group 2 Galileo EBF Futurity Stakes over seven furlongs (1408m).



The Futurity Stakes has a long and distinguished honour roll with some of the top names of leading Irish horses that include Cape Blanco (2009), Arazan (2008), New Approach (2007), Teofilo (2006), Horatio Nelson (2005), Oratorio (2004), Van Nistelrooy (2002), Hawk Wing (2001) and Giant’s Causeway (1999).



It was the second year running that trainer Jessica Harrington has taken the Futurity Stakes – having won the race last year with Pathfork – and she joins the likes of Aidan O’Brien and Jim Bolger as multiple winners of the race while other winning trainers include John Oxx, Mark Johnston and Mick Channon.



Dr Tan said the Group 1 Goffs National Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh on September 10 was likely to be Dragon Pulse’s next assignment, providing the ground had some cushion in it.



“The track has been quite firm and we want a little bit of give,” said Dr Tan. “The National Stakes is a Group 1 race and he looks like a Group 1 horse in the making.



“Hopefully when he finishes this campaign he will spell well and then train on next year and hopefully he will get to one of the Classic races.



“It is every owners dream to own an English, Irish or French Classic horse and with Dragon Pulse still being a colt hopefully we may have one.”



Dragon Pulse, by Kyllachy from the Croco Rouge mare Poetical, was purchased for $120,000 euros (S$210,000) and has raced three times running a debut second over six furlongs (1207m) at the Curragh on June 3. He was then successful over that trip at Leopardstown on July 21 before his victory on Saturday.



Besides his team of horses in Singapore and Dragon Pulse in Ireland, Dr Tan is establishing a stable of horses to race in Japan after being granted the rare privilege of owning racehorses by the Japan Racing Association just over 12 months ago.

If you are checking out value French alternatives for the 2000, a better one maybe Hamdan's Abtaal in the care of J-C Rouget; beat French Fifteen easily last year and is declared for the Djebel on Thursday.

Delzangles will not finalise Guineas plans until after Hermival and Dragon Pulse have run in their trials (in the Prix Djebel and the Prix de Fontainebleau respectively).

I agree that Abtaal looks very interesting on form and there is some money looking to back him.

H is far, far more likely to come over than DP should everything work out.

A few weeks ago the trainer said the following:
"The QIPCO 2000 Guineas is a race we are considering for both horses. They will both run once before that in the trials - one will run in the Prix Djebel and the other in the Prix de Fontainebleau. We will what happens there and then decide after that. Dragon Pulse has been with me for three weeks. I was impressed with his Irish form, and he looks like he is a very decent horse. He has not done any work for me yet, but physically he has all the looks and size to make a champion. Hermival won quite impressively at Saint-Cloud and I like him. He is not a show horse, but he is a very hard worker and if he improves he could be a very good horse."

Hermival has potential, but Dragon Pulse is probably a class above. I wouldn't read too much into the fact that Dragon Pulse is going for the traditional French Guineas trial race at Longchamp. On the other hand, if Hermival manages to beat the likes of Abtaal and French Fifteen in the Prix Djebel then it would be madness not to send him over to Newmarket...

Quite clearly, DP's got the form call over Hermival at the moment - and I'm not saying Hermival's about to win the Guineas, but I would read plenty into which horse is running in which race, james.  The Delzangles quote's got mould on it I'm afraid.

How good a race did it look? How far was Hermival beaten?

Before HM mentioned about the French races I had a few quid on DP at fancy prices - perhaps now if he wins his trial they may send him over though I accept that they may still stay in France.

I wouldn't say that.  Hermival finished third and it wouldn't be beyond the realms that he still came over.  Indeed, it wouldn't be a total shock if he improved past FF and Abtaal.

I think that ABTAAL is the one to take from the race.  He was given a tender ride and will probably reverse placings with the winner.  I'll be surprised if they aim HERMIVAL at the Guineas.

MD was saying he only needs to run well to be considered, james.  I thought he ran well.  Of more of an issue is his action, which doesn't scream Newmarket and quick ground to me.  All three still in the mix I'd have thought....including ABTAAL.

Hi BM, he's in the book but wouldn't be my first choice out of France for the Derby atm.  The Hernando influence is there for all to see - far more a lengthener than quickener - and if he gets to Epsom and there's anything near him at the one pole with a turn of foot he's toast imo. I'd make him fav for the Leger though! Hoping there are more interesting Frenchies to emerge.

I agree about HISTORIC FIND.  His dam is a full sister to DUBAI MILLENNIUM, so it's no surprise that he's very well entered up, even though he has only won a heavy ground maiden last November - he's in the Noailles, Greffulhe, Poulains, Hocquart, Prix du Jockey-Club and Grand Prix de Paris.  He'll probably need 10f to be seen to best advantage.

Did well to win on his second start, I thought.  One of the last to swing into the straight and they all came stands' side - he had to challenge wide on the worst ground and pretty much went past the lot of them.

I've been through all of Mo's 3-y-os with Fabre and he is one of three that I thought were of particular interest this year.

Yes i know Soumillion made a bit of a balls of it but stil had time to respond wen asked

Dabirsim was rolling around in the final furlong, a sure sign that he was getting tired.  Soumillon wanted to nurse him home but misjudged it.  He just about stays a mile but may prove best at 7f.  It'll be interesting to see whether the winner DRAGON PULSE comes over for the Guineas.

"Gregory has ridden the perfect race, it's not easy to ride a waiting race off a slow pace," said Delzangles. "In the normal run of things we'll be back for the Poule d'Essai in four weeks."

Delzangles also revealed the latest running plans for his Classic hopes Dragon Pulse, who beat Dabirsim in the Prix De Fontainebleau on Sunday, and Prix Djebel third Hermival.

Delzangles added: “Dragon Pulse will go to the French 2000 Guineas, but Hermival is likely to head to Newmarket for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas. He has improved a lot for his run in the Djebel and he should run well.”

Ground will play a key roll, sint.  If this rain keeps up it might favour Hermival over Abtaal - and as I'm winning four times as much on Hermival we're looking for the positives!  I do still think Abtaal has the potential to be a very good horse though, as plenty do at this stage.  All cleared up?

They just cut it for the sake of it. They've taken all the most improved and akeed mofeed money, now theyre sliming the books. It gives them an excuse to squeeze the value in time for when the on the day prices come around.
